Aussie ad banned

A commercial promoting Australia has been banned by UK TV advertising regulators because it contains the word "bloody".

Tourism Australia had hoped to lure Britons Down Under by featuring enticing pictures of the country accompanied by the slogan: "So where the bloody hell are you?"

But, according to Tourism Australia, the "bloody" will have to be dropped after objections from the UK's Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre.

It's considered by some as blasphemous I think. Compared with many of todays swear words it's 'tame'.

"Some say it may be derived from the phrase "by Our Lady", a sacrilegious invocation of the Virgin Mary. The abbreviated form "By'r Lady" is common in Shakespeare's plays around the turn of the 17th century. "

"Bloody has always been a very common part of Australian speech and has not been considered profane for some time. The word was christened "the Australian adjective" by The Bulletin on 18 August 1894. In the 1940s an Australian divorce court judge held that "the word bloody is so common in modern parlance that it is not regarded as swearing". Meanwhile, Neville Chamberlain's government was fining Britons for using the word in public.

The word is seldom used with a negative connotation in the United States, but is sometimes used to imitate or ridicule the British. Apocryphal extensions of "bloody" are sometimes used in American humor, such as "bloody f**k" or "bloody ****", though the British rarely, if ever, use those phrases. The term "bloody murder" (usually in reference to a particularly loud scream or yell), is also in common use, without any connection with the British usage.

In March2006Tourism Australia launched an advertising campaign with the slogan "So where the bloody hell are you?", only to find that the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre in the UK would not allow the word "bloody" to be used in television versions of the commercial. This ban was seen as particularly pointless because print ads and cinema commercials for the campaign will not be censored.

There is also "Bloody hell" which can mean "Damn it", or be used as a general expression of surprise.

crikey!

Used euphemistically for Christ as a mild expression of surprise, especially in Australia, and often in Britain.

Yeah, I nearly posted that ad myself.. grin... Good one. Bleedin' is apparently OK in England but not bloody. Great info, Bez! The Queen is currently with us, of course, and one local cartoonist couldn't resist it. The ad says something like 'Where the bloody hell will you be....' The cartoon had our Prime Minister leaning on a podium welcoming the Queen to our shores. She was standing behind him and the caption has her saying 'Where the bloody hell am I?'

Apparently Prince Edward (? I get them all mixed up but the kind of bald one who came with Mum to the Commonwealth Games) was apparently heard to use it goodnaturedly the other day to a bunch of photographers. Something like.. could you guys cut down that bloody clicking noise I can't hear a thing. Shows at least one of them is human.

Apparently Prince Edward was not overjoyed at being lured to the Commonwealth Games under false pretences. His Mom told him it was a jolly to go and watch "It's a Knockout"

Apparently the Canadian Government now have a problem with it because it says "hell"

You just can't win sometimes!

On a similar note, has anyone noticed the uproar that HASN't happened about the Inghams chicken ad with the young girl that says bloody?

(For those who haven't seen it, a young girl is in the car with her mother and calls one of her friends a bloody idiot. The mother looks shocked and asks her where she got that language from, then proceeds to yell abuse at a car that pulls out in front of her. When they get home, they're having chicken for dinner, the father says to the little girl, "You've got a top Mum (or something to that effect) to which the girl replies "Bloody oath")

And the juice ad with Ron Moss (Ridge from B&B) where he says "Bloody oath"? (Funny ad!!)

Why is it wrong for a grown woman to say it, but a girl in a school uniform or a soap star with a bad Aussie accent.... no problem. Is it just me, or is something wrong with this picture?

"No," Unc,replies, "I’ve just bought this state-of-the-art watch. I was just testing it."

The intrigued woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so

Special about it?"

Unc, explains, 'It uses Alpha waves to talk to me telepathically.'

The lady says, "What's it telling you now?"

"Well, it says you're not wearing any panties..."

The woman giggles and replies, "Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!"

Unc, smiles, taps his watch and says......

"Bloody thing's an hour fast." :)

G'day mrsk!! Apparently what pi%%ed off the Canadian powers that be was the picture of a half full (or possibly half empty) glass of unspecified brand beer at the end of the ad. That fell foul of lots of rules there, and to boot, might have been shown when children were around!!! GEESCH. We aussies are now potential corrupters of innocent maple leaf kiddies. Shame on us. Of course we'll now get tons of new free publicity.
