Computers, software they use-nothing like writing with a word processor instead of using a typewriter.

I'm not quite that old (Colossus was operational in 1943) so I'd have to say the fantastic plastic - the credit card has changed the world and not necessarily for the better.

Not as a consumer I take it. As a computer consultant, how did the magic money provide your livelihood?

For me, I'd have to say the internet. It has made the world so much smaller and has enabled me to make friends with people from places which I am unlikely to ever visit :)

Sorry to hear that Q.

Id have to say the construction of the Berlin wall is right there at the top of my list. 96 miles of barbed wire and reinforced concrete is better than a warm puppy on Christmas morning. Checkpoint Charlie, thats my middle name.

That bucket on the JCB is one of my cup sizes.

Shame about the job losses, i'd better stock up on JCB's before they go BUST :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

Construction machinery firm JCB has announced it is to cut 684 jobs.

JCB staff had agreed to pay cuts to stave off job cuts

The firm blamed a lack of credit available from banks to fund machine purchases and continuing low confidence for the decision.

Several sites will be hit by the cuts, including plants in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Wrexham in North Wales.

The job losses affect 593 shopfloor and 91 staff positions and are in addition to 1,000 redundancies announced since July.

Jeff Randall on Sky News

Jeff Randall meets Alistair Darling for some tough talking about the recession in his new show on Sky News. Monday at 7.30pm

JCB employs around 7,900 globally, with around 4,800 in the UK, including more than 4,300 in Staffordshire.

Workers at the company voted to reduce their hours last year in a bid to save jobs, a move which the firm said has protected over 300 employees from the threat of redundancy.

Production in the UK in the first three months of 2009 will be around 75% lower than at the same time last year, the company said.

But the problem for most of business is not the thought of recruiting more staff, but whether or not they can afford to hang on to their existing workers.

Michael Wilson on how to solve job insecurity

JCB chief executive Matthew Taylor said: "Back in November we forecast a moderate second quarter recovery in 2009 based on the fact that Governments around the world had pumped a huge amount of money into recapitalising financial institutions and had committed to stimulus packages which included significant spending on public construction projects.

"Two months later, despite the recapitalisation, customers are still struggling to buy machines because of a lack of available credit."

I have a stimulus package as well. Ohhhhhh Matron!!!
