Spot....... Help please with technology probs

Post by Oscar Namechange »

My computer whizz pal has officialy been diagnosed with swine flu and won't be get out to me for at least 2 weeks.

The problem is this:

We have 2 pc's in the house and 1 laptop. Recently, the two pc's were converted to wireless the same as the laptop.

Since then, i can not get or send e mail on my pc and laptop although i can on Pete's.

When i try to send or recieve e mail, i get a pop up telling me that my firewall is stopping the e mails. If i try to disable the firewall, i get another pop up saying another firewall is stopping me from disabling the first one.

I have rung BT and they say it's the firewalls. Now i'm confused.com.

Any idea's Spot please?

Do you have the "windows firewall" turn on also? go into your control panel and at the bottom you will see the windows firewall (a globe with a brick wall in front of it) open it turn it off if it is on. If that doesn't work is there a firewall you don't know about with that comes with your provider.
ALOHA!!

I do think there is indeed a firewall that has come with the provider of the laptop as it's fairly new and it's clashing with my existing firewall and anti-virus.

Any idea's Spot please?Quite a few ideas, the difficulty is narrowing down the alternatives.

"i get a pop up telling me that my firewall" - the exact text might help identify where it's from.

"i get another pop up saying another firewall" - the exact text might help identify where that's from too.

If we can distinguish which program's doing what we might be able to stop them from interfering.

1. Run the attached .REG file.

2. From the command prompt, enter

netsh firewall reset

3. Open Windows Firewall control panel and enable it.

Should that NOT work, this is the final thing you should try before reinstalling XP or ZoneAlarm:

1. From the command prompt, enter:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%infnetrass.inf

2. Restart

3. From the command prompt, enter NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Hope this helps.

One more possible fix, if you can't get the above two steps to work:

1. From the Command Prompt, enter:

netsh winsock reset

2. After receiving a confirmation, reboot

3. Check if the Windows Firewall service has started. If not, repeat the above two steps.

Cool...!! You will be reading for hours. That "Windows Firewall" is a pain in the behind. If you have problems again always check there first sometime with update it turns itself on again. ;)

I'm hoping to be able to get one of the Gorilla's keepers in a conversation tomorrow.
