Do our opinions change as we age?

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I bought myself a sweater yesterday. Highly fashionable I thought but was lime Green in colour and a chunky Knit with matching green buttons. When I tried it on at home, My husband told me that 'Did I realise, that If my mother had knitted that for me 20 years ago, I would have hid It In the back of the wardrobe the same as the bright Pink cable knit she knitted for me 20 years ago'? The bright pink thing was presented to me one Christmas and I had to go through that thing where you have to pretend to be absolutely delighted with It, don the Item Immediately but secretly preying that none of your mates call round and see you. It was hid In the back of my wardrobe and only brought out when she was due to visit. Once the visit was over, it would be laundered and go straight back Into hiding.

Every year my mother would make me Chutney, and jars of pickled veg. After 20 years of jars of chutney going rotton In my cupboards, I had to confess to her that I hated the stuff.

All of my adult life, she bought me Cadbury's Cream eggs every Easter. I had a pact with one of my brothers who loves them to never let on to her so he always got double each year.

Some years before he died, my father painted me an oil painting. This stayed behind the wardrobe until he was due for a visit and then It was dusted and hung on the wall. He had barely left the front door upon leaving when I'd whip It down and put It back behind the wardrobe quick.

So.... Yesterday I bought myself a chunky knit Lime green sweater, some Chutney, Some Pickled Cabbage, a pack of Cadbury's Cream Eggs and I'm just thinking of how good Father's painting would look hung In the hall.

:confused::confused::confused:

I think If I became more like my Mother every day, my Husband would be delighted. She was a lady. Yep, I know that's difficult to believe with me :wah:

The thing with the Pink Sweater she knited me. Why is It that we will endure the most hideous just to avoid hurting their feelings?

I still haven't the heart to tell my brothers wives that I don't actually like alcohol so the bottles of wine they give me end up being used as prizes In raffles I attend.

I finally got caught out with Fathers painting. Dispite my Insistence that his painting always took pride of place In the Lounge , he was asked me If I was aware that the colour of the paint behind the painting on the wall was the same as the rest of the room. As I smoked In the Lounge, he pointed out that behind the painting would be a brighter shade of paint. :wah:

I certainly have changed. I used to be so "live and let live" type of a person. Now, I am getting to be really subdued. I miss my "fun" self to a point, I really do. Now I am such a serious type person, and can't say I am proud of it either.:wah: How do you get to being a fun person again?

Go down to your local pub and have a laugh with a complete stranger.

I do it , it breaks the monotony of life. :) And you can make connections and learn a **** load.

Our serious side tells us we are shy, nobody will talk to us, we'll be assaulted or raped, we'll only meet boring people, it's flirtatious and sends the wrong message etc etc etc. ..WRONG!!!!.

SMILE at people !!!!! It's good for you and it's catchy ...Seriously try it. people may think you're a complete whacko (that should give you a chuckle) or they may just think ...WOW! what a nice person.:) I always smile and say hello to the first person I lay eyes on when I walk into anywhere . They have no choice but to answer you.

I see children dying of lack of food, animals being hunted to extinction, folks losing their jobs, their homes and their partners. I see people In prison for doing terrible things to another human being, people dying of cancer etc etc. Then I count my blessings and let up on life.

Believe me, I count my blessings. When I was 26 or 27 my first husband had a massive stroke, and at that time I thought I had the world by the tail. We were so fortunate, yet we did do our best to help other people when we could, and that happened.

Now, since then I am back in Canada and have a better life than most others, but the job I do is to help everyday workers in th Workers' Compensation world to get benefts through the Workers Compensation Board [WCB] which of course, WCB does far from getting their real proper jobs done, so there are so many people out there being compensated to their full extent, and I guess I am just a little cynical about life, governments, etc.

Sorry, to be such a wet blanket, but all of this is perpetuated by all the problems that come with having to be or not to be (accepted on WCB) and that just creates more problems.

Thus, to say I try to leave all of this at the office, but it is so hard. I do try and forget about the others that are not having a good life because of one problem or another, but it is hard - when I have so much than others.

We are barely making it ourselves, so I cannot imagine what it is like for people on social assistance of any sort. And. thats all I have to say about that!

edit to say on the third line because of "Windows"

Sorry Betty Boop :wah:

If my cardi's came from M and S they come from 'per una', you should check them out they do some great stuff that's limited and not at all grannyfied.

M and S actually do some good classy ranges as well, yes they have the granny section still but it's certainly not all for the over 60's.

I trend set in my cardi's, Theia is not the only envious one :p:wah:

I have never had the urge to go looking In any other departments so maybe I should have a snoop next time I'm down there. I tend to hate department stores full stop... all of them, Debenhams, John Lewis etc. I think M&S's Image Is still firmly stuck In the 50's.

The last time I was in the main store I couldn't see a thing I would buy, yet in 'per una' I could have happily blown a few hundred pounds :wah:

You could start your own range... 'Cornwalls cardi Goddess range'.

Why do people who wear cradi's always look cold huddled In them?

Fashion opinions might change, mine usually don't. I still hate plaids and refuse to wear them, unless it is a Scottish plaid for a reason.

Paisley, never cared for it much, so I just avoid that type of print.

What can I say, I still wear jeans whenever I can, never needed platform shoes, and still have my long blond hair. I will never grow up!

Thinking about It, I suppose my 'fashion' hasn't changed over the years. I always wear black hence my husband asking If I was going through the menopause when I bought the Lime Green sweater. I can not wear heels any more but I wear my original 1970's knee high Doc martins all the time as they never age. Some have mistaken me for a biker or a Goth In the past but I just happen to love black clothes. At home I wear cargo pants alot and hoodies but going out I like a simple black dress with a little bit of bling.

Naturally they do. Extensive life experiences shape alternative ways of thinking, adapting, creating solutions that once may have confounded us not so long ago.

Im relieved to say I havent reached the stage of wearing a lime green sweater is ok and my wife has specific instructions to shoot me if I ever come home with long black socks and wing tips to wear with my plaid shorts.

Yes, Bets, but I'm the High Priestess :yh_rotfl

However, as High Priestess, I am highly qualified to say to one and all that not one of your cardis is unfashionable or frumpy. I wouldn't covet them so much if they were.

Oh, I remember the "old days" so well...it wasn't just one coat in Per Una...there would be a skirt or two...then on to Debenhams...a few cardis, boots and tops later we would stagger back to your car. I imagine that your daughter is hoping to relive those days she remembers :wah:

Of course, that's right, those weren't my purchases, they were yours! So it's all your fault, you will have to remember that she's out of a buggy now, so you will have to carry your own purchases :p:D
