Reactions to FISH PIE

Post by Lon »

I had never heard of nor eaten Fish Pie until earlier this week. I thought it was delicious. Some kind of fairly sweet tasting white fish in a creamy sauce with browned and seasoned bread crumbs on top.

The response from many people that I told about this meal was gaaaaa yuckll.

Have you had Fish Pie? Do you like it?

Here's where I had mine.

Usually fish pie has a mixture of white fish, smoked fish and oily fish with a potato and cheese topping - delicious.

Fish pie is a regular in my household. Home made a white sauce, smoked haddock, prawns and salmon covered with mashed potato.

Served - in our house - with broccolli and carrots

I had some in Scotland and have made it since. I love it! Here's a recipe I'll try next time I make it. Sounds a little different with the tomatoes & eggs.

Eyemouth Fish Pie

12 oz fresh white fish filleted (cod, haddock, whiting or sole) (350 g)

1 tbsp finely chopped shallots

Half pt milk (250 ml)

2 eggs, hard boiled

3 large tomatoes, skinned

For the sauce -

Strained cooking liquor from the fish

1 oz flour (25 g)

1 oz butter (25 g)

For the topping -

1 and half Ib cooked mashed potatoes (750 g)

2 oz grated cheese (50 g)

1 oz butter (25 g)

2 tbsp breadcrumbs

Put fish in a pan with milk, shallots and seasoning. Cover and simmer very gently for about 5 minutes. Cool.

Make up the sauce now by melting the butter in a pan and adding the flour. Stir for a few minutes over a gentle heat without colouring. Then add the strained cooking liquor gradually and a little white wine, if available. Check seasoning and add fish and shallots. At this point slice the eggs and tomatoes. Put a layer of fish mixture, then hard-boiled eggs and tomatoes into a 2-2 and half pt pie dish (1 L-1 and a half L) till it is full. Beat the cheese and butter into the potatoes, check seasoning and spread on top. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and brown under the grill.

I've never brought myself to have the wish to lick the drippings of bacon fat but I will admit bacon grease is excellent to cook with. Did I mention how good bacon is? :wah:

As for the OP I assume many people will automatically shun "fish pie" only because it's not a familiar choice of cuisine for them. In my experience with taco soup, and fish tacos, both being very delicious(Fish tacos is a recipe RedGlitter, a special friend of mine personally, had given me(She's no longer a member here at FG due to being "banned"), I will say that I would surely try "fish pie".

I Love fish tacos! Is taco soup the same as tortilla soup? If so, I love it too.

It could be. We Ohians can't necessarily imply we know anything about Mexican cuisine other than it consists of meat, cheese, beans, lettuce, tomato, and obviously tortillas all wrapped together in about 2,000 different ways!! :yh_wink

That sounds pretty tasty.

I had something similar when I was in Maine, but with Scallops, Cod and Mackerel, with a topping sorta like Potatoes au Gratin, and crumbled Pilot Crackers.

I asked my hostess what she called it, and she said, "Dinnah"

My first mother in law prepared for me what she thought would be a Special Dinner by DEEP FAT FRYING A T BONE STEAK--------Holy sh-t!!! It looked like a piece of a boot when she got done with it. It was served along with collard greens (also fried) and fried tomatoes. That family fried everything in bacon grease.

A beautiful dish. I go for any fish dish when I have the opportunity to go to a decent restaraunt. I will always choose scallops and mussels. Last year we went to a resteraunt just outside Rye on the south coast of England. Their speciality was Lemon Sole stuffed with scallops and crab meat. I went again a few weeks later just to have that dish again.

Last year we had a weekend trip to Brugges in Belgium so I inevitably overdosed on mussels :D

One of the bet meals I've had was a Bouillabaisse from a resteraunt on the Fish Quay in Brussels. Cooked to perfection.
