I've been rummaging through my memory. The first international flight I took was in a Douglas DC3 off a grass strip at Lydd to France. I distinctly remember being in another LOT Dakota during a thunderstorm between Warsaw and Krakow and watching the wings flex alarmingly as it hit air pockets of differing densities. They were, I suspect, ubiquitous among discount and Eastern European airlines back then.
I bet Lon's been in older aircraft than that, mind.

Not really Spot----My very first flight was also on a DC3 from Chicago's O'Hare Airport to Oakland, California 1953. It was cold coffee and one ancient stewardess with a hearing aid. (flight attendant)
I got to Chicago by train from Oakland.

There are cars now with the same range and speed. Mind you, the cars probably cost more.
The entire plane, fully laden, couldn't exceed eleven tons. Pack it with 30 passengers and I bet the ancient stewardess had to be skinny to qualify.
They did build a lot of them though.

I left San Francisco by ship in 1953 going to Yokohama, Japan and had my second flight on a C-119 from Yokohama to Kimpo Airbase, Korea.

It's not a period I've seen you discuss, Lon. I'd be interested, if you feel inclined sometime. Arriving in Korea in 1953 may have added to the drama of the flight.

For a 18 year old kid the whole experience added to the drama and adventure. Once in Korea I worked on the instruments for the F 86 Sabre Jet.

I never flew on anything like older American cargo planes although I once spent 18 hours flying from Philadelphia to Rota Spain in a C-5 Galaxy, why I was never told.
I remember another plane I was on scared the hell out of me, I don't remember what it was but the airline was called Arrow Airlines and the first thing that struck me was how dirty the plane was outside. We were somewhere over the north Atlantic and the plane was jumping around like you wouldn't believe. I had a window seat and I could see the wings doing all kinds of weird stuff.
I think that this flight really helped me to grasp (at the tender age of 20) the concepts of helplessness, sheer terror and accepting ones fate is in the hands of another. It certainly cured any fear of flying I had.
In Russia I've flown on several different kinds of aircraft. Tu-154 passenger liners and Il-86 cargo planes and the 2 most notable were and AN-2 bi plane and a MI-26 Halo.

You can still ride in a DC-3 in South America.
A fine, sturdy plane. A tad noisy by today's standards, but they don't fall out of the sky easily.
The first commercial flight I was ever on was Pan Am Lockheed L-049 Constellation into Washington, DC from Chicago

No---the Device was not on board any of the flights that I was on. The first flight that I was on left from Florida went to the Artic and back to Florida with mid air refueling. During 1955-56 these planes as I'm sure you know, were armed and constantly in the air 24/7.

Rock Hudson, if I recall correctly. Though it's the inimitable Slim Pickens who sticks in the mind, of course. And a very early James Earl Jones.
