Hayley Westenra (from New Zealand) was only 16 when she sang this in front of Queen Elizabeth II at the Remembrance Service November 2008

Not "right now" exactly, but this week I did manage to catch a Pink Floyd tribute band which played, as part of their second set, the whole of Dark Side of the Moon complete with an on-topic light-show. I'm tempted to start a thread on how good they were, I was impressed.

Thats interesting. I have been listening to a Pink Floyd tribute album called Pink Box:Songs of Pink Floyd, with artists such as Rick Wakeman, John Whetton, Keith Emmerson, Edgar Winter, Steve Howe.

Its on Spotify if you've access to that

Beyond that is a very good album by Walt Wagner (In the Pink, Music of Pink Floyd) who plays tracks solely on the piano and beautifully too, with a very clear understanding of the music

I was at a restaurant in Boston a while back. They had a pianist playing in a corner. About halfway through our meal, I was caught up in the music he was playing, but could not place it. As I listened, a lot of other people seemed to take notice. Very haunting. And then it came me - and apparently half the other diners - he was playing "Dark side of the Moon."

He received quite the ovation when he finished.

As for what I have been listening to, lately,

I heard these folks while driving across Kansas a week or so back.

This young lady kinda reminds me of early Emmy Lou Harris. A little darker spirit, perhaps.

Nice find! I don't spend a lot of time looking for new music; but I've noticed KEXP a few times before, when I've stumbled across new music I happen to like. Another source I keep track of is the NPR music show - All Songs Considered - which I collect off the podcasts of weekly episodes.

I honestly don't find much similarity between the girl leading this band and Emmylou Harris. There may be some similarities in songwriting styles from Emmylou's catalogue of songs, but her voice is thin and higher than this girl's deeper, earthy voice...which reminds me more of Adele or the late Amy Whinehouse...especially on those bluesier numbers.

I watched this Liveset concert afterwards, which covers some of the same songs, but has a wider range of material. Never heard of Liveset before...I'll have to check out some of their other concerts.

We do an arrangement of that with the choir. I've got a video of us doing it in Winchester Cathedral at a Memorial Concert for the 2 Firemen that were killed in action the previous year. I'd like to put it on YouTube & link it, but unfortunately I don't have the Publication rights, as these lie with the families of the deceased.

Right now I'm giving my brain a bit of a rest, having just completed & submitted for Digital Publishing an SATB arrangement for "The Minstrel Boy". It's surprising how mentally exhausting that can be & what a sudden surge of relief it can be when you stop.

Ronnie (Veronica Bennet) Spector married famous record producer (and convicted killer) Phil Spector (in prison in Stockton, CA) in 1968 and stayed married to him until 1974. They adopted 3 sons together, including twin boys! She left Phil in 1971 because she feared for her life and had to walk through a glass door to escape him. She'll be 71 on August 10, 2014.

The travesty is, that dueche bag Phil Spector broke up the Ronettes at the top of their popularity because he was jealous of all the attention Ronnie was getting.

That was brilliant, Fourpart, thank you very much for sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed Mnozil Brass, such talent ! I believe they're Austrian, so not a lot of hope seeing them perform in the UK, I don't think, unless they do a tour. It would be great to see them on UK TV, and maybe they would be invited to attend the Royal Variety Performance. :-3

It appears they're touring the UK in October (as well as some other countries):

Dates | Mnozil Brass

There's also a lot of other related sites for them on YouTube. As one of them describes the band on their Home Page, they're very "Monty Python-esque".

Thanks for that FourPart, but looking at the dates I see there aren't any very near to me and it would be difficult and costly to make the trip to see them. Hopefully they may be on TV at some time during their UK tour.

triggered by a trivia question I missed this morning, I spent the morning listening to various recordings of Beethoven's Opus 62, the Coriolan Overture.

I have now settled into this version by Carlos Kleiber conducting the Bavarian State Orchestra who followed the overture with Mozart's Symphony no 33 and then Brahm's 4th.

Very nice way to spend a Friday morning.

Sonja Kristina on vocals and Florian Pilkington-Miksa on drums. I'm not sure who they've borrowed to do the violin.

This Diana Ross rendition has always been a favourite of mine, and one that needs to be fairly high volume to get a good effect. I'm afraid I crack up when I see those three 'lip-sinking' like mad when it's the Beegees who are backing Diana with the Beegees' own song !
