Skype Is Brilliant!

Post by Galbally »

WOW, I just used skype for the first time, at the prompting of a friend in New Delhi, who I spoke to on the thing from Ireland for 2 hours today FOR FREE! Why am I so slow at picking up on these things, I've known about it for ages but never bothered downloading it, what a waste of money I've been engaged in for the last year!

I've mentioned this to LC before, i thought it would be ideal for her and Bothwell.

Google do something along the same lines but i'm not too sure if they charge you.

Is it easy to download?,

what equipment do you need?

Is there a relay when you are talking?

What's the catch, if its free how do they make money?

Like that girl just posted you can download the program for free from skype.com, once you have the program you give yourself a user name. Get your friends to also download the program, when ye are all online (this is the drawback as you have to know when your friends are online to ring them) simply search for their usernames and these will be added to your skype contacts list, when you have a contact, and both of you are online you simply ring them and thats it, you can talk away for free anywhere there is a telephone line on the planet. You need a mike on your computer and speakers or headphones to hear them. Thats it, its brilliant, I hope you get it working.

There is a part of the website, where they try and charge you for things, but just ignore that get bothwell to download the skype program, download it yourself, get 2 usernames, arrange a time for you both to be online at the same time, set the program to find your respetive usernames and then talk away. Well, thats how I did it yesterday, it seemed to work perfectly and I wasn't asked for money at any stage.

Galbally? Did you search it for spyware? That would be a big concern of mine. I did a quick search on a help site and so far skype looks pretty good, but I like to be cautious downloading something like this. I make sure it isn't packaged with some unwanted programs, make sure free actually means free, etc.

Yeah, Norton, seemed to check it out fine, and I'm too computer illiterate to do anything further on it, but I've heard from reliable friends that its above board and all that, anyway, I havn't noticed any problems with it yet, but you should definetly check it out as much as you can before you use it, as you know what these computer things are like.

You can also do this through a WEBCAM through any of the Instant messaging programs.. They all have sound and video options and it FREE as well.. Great way to save money.. Just get a WEBCAM with a MIC and your good to go.. You can either use the audio alone or the audio and the webcam at the same tme. All you need is for the person your talking to have the same IM Sofware you do. I have used this for a while now its great.. :D

I can vouch for Galbally Skype is really good it is the same as talking on a phone. I also talk to you guys or play games at the same time. :D

I used to have Google Talk which is the same, but not enough people have it so there's no one to talk to.

I use Skype here in New Zealand to talk to friends and relatives in the U.S., Portugal and So. Americal. It works best if caller and recepient have Broadband, otherwise there can be echo and delayed response.
