When the pledge was written, it ended with "and justice for all". How do we teach our children to respect law enforcement, and the judicial system, when we see injustice constantly?
Case #1. A man, if you can call him that, has not had a driver's license for at least the last 10 years. Has that stopped him from driving? NO. He drives by the police, waves at him, they wave back. His brother, who is a councilman, is the first one to admit he should be arrested. Is he? Heck no.
Case #2. Last week, my son was on his friend's porch. A man who just got out of prison for 3 years for holding the record for the most DUI's in the state of Ohio, came on that friend's porch and attacked my 17 year old son. He clawed his face, hit him in the head with a ball bat, and punched him. The alcohol does not mix well with his heart meds (and God knows what illegal drugs) so he goes and attacks a kid. MY kid. He is being charged with misdemeanor assault since they are afraid that because my son didn't have a concussion, felonious assault would not stick.
Case #3. Today, in our town, a lady started firing shots through her windows. She hit her neighbor's house, fired at police, fired off at least 20 rounds. The police used tear gas, went in fearing she had shot herself when the firing stopped, and found her passed out from an overdose of prescription pain medication. The sherriff stated that no charges would probably be pressed. WTF? They had to block off streets, she hit her neighbor's house, fired at police and there will not be charges? People have gone to prison for a lot less!
Thanks for letting me rant. I'm really tired of my kids asking me how any of this is right. My answer any more? It's not right. Do your best to be your best because obviously there is no true justice around here. Sad, but true.

you know what Peg? your examples make me mad too. the assault on your son was an aggravated felony (by deadly weapon) battery by a (probable) parolee, a VOP for which there is no bail/bond. and i can think of about 14 charges on the female firing a weapon! i am angry at my weak DA offfice. i make good arrests, get all the evidence, i am talking 1st degree murder charges here. and the DA deals??? i get a confession and ALL the evidence, and they take a plea?? they were seeking death! don't even get me started. where is the little scumweasel that hit your son?

That's what irritates me. If you get an honest cop that does their job, then you have to hope for the same thing out of the prosecutor and the judge. I swear around here, they are all nuts! The last thing they seem to want in this town is productive citizens.

the police and DA are usually in bed together. their priorities diverge here...save the cost of trial. save the months of trial. blah blah. but i had a female who beat her grandma to death with a hammer. we had plaster casts of her footprints in grandma's blood! we had it all. DA seeks death. then DA backs down and takes a second-degree plea and gives her 18 years. this female confessed to me!! christ. i am not the only one at my wits end. we have a female who shot her 4 year old twin sons in the head(s). the DA is seeking death. i am not sure why this case hasn't gone national, but that's ok with me since she plans to subpeona me and court tv is going to tape. the paxil made her do it. (not to mention the huge alcohol level). if i get called into court, even though i have known her 4 years, i cannot, will not help her.

I can't imagine what it is like to know someone who shot her own children! How devastating. But I guess, lc, you see a lot of horrible things. It must be hard to keep your humour and optimism.
I knew a young man who killed a local student drunk driving. I ran into him a short while later (I wish with my car) and he was laughing about how he knew all the police and would get off with a slap on the wrist. He did. This guy was always arrogant. At least he stopped drinking. For the rest of the time I knew him, anyway.

Boy! It sure is scary hearing stuff like this but there will come a day when peple start fighting back. People will try to get away everything using any excuse that they can muster and then there are the bozos that believe their excuses and make excuses for them... themselves.
It gets worse when people that shouldn't be convicted are convicted. The system is overloaded. People are case history numbers and once you lose the human element then you are no better than the guys that used to tatoo wrists a few years back.
This is not meant to demean you, lc, or the rest of the police because your job is hard enough and thankless as it is. It is the system above that stinks because they have the power to make things happen.
Arrested this 16 year old in the early 70's. Murder of a young nurse. Trial, roommates testimony, he smoked pot yadda yadda yadda. I looked at the evidence and concluded that he was innocent but was going to go to jail for life because the media needed a fall guy. Why? Because in America there was the Manson family and Canada needed to have their own because of some inferiority complex that made them prove that they were equally as good at catchiing this kind of vermin as their American counterparts were. Spent 23 years in jail before they were finally able to prove that he was innocent through DNA. Canadian national horror story. Poor kid.
There is a big influence by the media. They will build or destroy careers based on what they want to see happen with whatever case they've applied their ink and reporters to. Sucks but it is a reality that is there. Political careers are built with he media backing. DA's and the like are all potential candidates in the future of politics. They don't want to offend the press.
Sorry to hear about your son. That sucks. Don't give up faith because there are more good guys than ther are bad. Fear of the press coverage may change a few minds about how they are handling things but like everything they are in bed with each other. Getting someone to listen is the hard part. Hope things work out better.

Peg, I am so sorry and furious enough to spit over what happened to your son. Is he doing ok? How he is feeling about it?
I don't know how to answer your question without a lot of ideals that just don't seem good enough in light of how close this is to you. What can you say to him? How can you ease his pain, and not ignite a fury in him? I wish I knew.
All I can say is that there is a huge need for people to begin to take back what is decent, and good. He might want to begin getting active in the community or politics to balance the scales. Maybe he could do a bit of research about those local events and write an editorial for the paper, or something along those lines. I offer it for 2 reasons - because we really do need good people to act, and because it would allow him an avenue to act, to not feel powerless when he's been attacked like this.

Ahhh.. ain't it great!!!!!! The rights of the criminal are greater than the rights of the victims. Makes me wanna vomit. Bout 3 years ago we had 2 little crackheads murder 2 people here in town. Then they kidnapped/carjacked another woman downtown. Crossed into NY, walked her into the woods and beat her to death. They finally caught the little freaks in Louisiana. Since the crossed state lines.. it is a federal case... and they arer pushing for the death penalty. Defense appealed that and of course one of the pansyass liberal judges here ruled that it was unconstitutional. Quick question here.. what about the victims constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..?? Anyway.. one of the little freaks hung himself.. no great loss there. The other one is still waiting to go to trial as his lawyers use every freaking trick in the book. The victims families have appealed tothe state legislature to put the death penalty back on the books, but nooooooooooo... heaven forbid we infringe on the rights of the criminals. Personally, I don't trust the current legal system as far as I can toss it.. and if I was the family of the above victims.. I would tell the judge to let them out. There are 300,000 acres of national forest in the state.. very easy to get lost in....

Well, we went to court today. What did my juvenile son learn? He learned it is okay for an adult to beat on a juvenile. When the judge asked him how he felt about the sentence of 50 days, 36 of which had been served, when the man could have received 6 months, he learned his opinion does not matter. Were we asked as the parents of this juvenile how we felt about the plea agreement? NO What a screwed up, messed up system. Now this man had just finished a 3 year sentence for the most DUI's in Ohio, turns around and overdoses on heart meds because he was too drunk to remember if he took them or not so takes them again, beats on my son while drunk and only gets 50 days! Will there be a plea agreement when REAL justice is served? The legal system here is such a pathetic joke and my son has learned this lesson well. I have 2 weeks to go before I have to spend the rest of the school year worrying about my son getting off the bus and home safely. He had just gotten off the school bus when this happened. I am so disgusted and fed up with the legal system words cannot describe my outrage. :-5 :-5
