Foreign words for things!

Sorry that's a poor thread title but I got to thinking about some of the words we use on here that people in other countries don't understand.

Like this week, I saw the word "spanner." What is that?

What are some words or expressions you use that we might need explanations for?

A "Spanner" is what the Americans would call a wrench...

A "Spanner" is also used as a slang term for someone who is "not quite the ticket"...

Hiya Pinks.

I and my other half have been away for two weeks in Turkey..

WOW it was hot.. Most days reached 100° and hardly dropped below 80° at night. Not bad for a late holiday.

AWwwwwwww I wouldn't have said your a spanner. OK then, maybe an adjustable one..:wah:

I just responded to a pm and it got me to thinking. I got called a "whackadoodle" recently. I get called a lot of things

and can usually get a clue at least from the tone of voice. But on line??? Without emoticon??? So I googled it in the Urban dictionary...

Whack - v:1) often associated with Italian mafia stereotypes from television, synonymous with assassinate. 2) To strike. 3) sometimes used as slang for masturbation

Struth - looked like the clueless loser was calling me a bloody wanker!!!! His dying words were however to assure me that it was a compliment.

Hi Wolfie!! I just looked up hoochie, hoochie mama and hoochie koochie in the Urban dictionary and I'm aghast.

Wench doesn't fare too well either.

hi oz pam we have not spoken before what does hoochie mean

hooch is like moon shine right

Hi Guys!

Hootch (or hooch) is moonshine or sometimes another booze of some kind. I've heard it used for pot too but I don't know if that's correct. I don't think it is but maybe someone else knows for sure.

Hootchie is sex. And a hootchie mama is a loose woman. Also known as skank, sleaze or slut.

This is fun.

I thought of Aussie Pam to ask, since she's in Australia but maybe someone else knows too: where do you derive the term "jake?" I had an Aussie friend who would say "It's all jake." Meaning it's all good but I never asked where that comes from.

Can I help out anyone with some Americanisms? :wah:

Oh, students bumming pencils and paper from everyone get called this. They better not let me hear them though.

One word I really hate, is when the kids use "pimp" to mean something cool and fixed up nice. It is another no-no word in my classroom. They know the other meaning of the word....................

Ha-they always say that! Cracks me up.

Second language students are the sneakiest-they call someone a b****, and when caught say, "I was saying let's go to the beach!" Like duh, I don't think so!

I am bad, I lay in wait for them, strolling by in the hallway speaking Spanish and wait until they say something, then tell them in Spanish I'm going to call their mother about this.:wah:

If fact, last night I has to translate a note passed around in class by the girls, it was about stuff a parent should know. When I e-mailed it in, it went up for a double translation at the School District Headquarters, I better have got the gossip right!

As fer hooch, yeah, moonshine, white lightning. In the hills round here, ya know, I reckon you might find a still or two among the marijuana patches of course. Just kidding. Copperhead Road we do however have, it's a neat ski trail between Mt Blue Cow and Perisher ! SKIING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

A skank is a person who doesn't bathe often enough or keep themselves clean. Being dirty is also known as being "scummy." Scum is an unpleasant substance such as greasy hair...fingernail dirt...or that white foamy stuff that happens when you boil chicken. :yh_sick Where Pinky lives, "skank" and "scuffer" mean the same thing- an unclean person.

In America, we don't use "scuffer" that I know of, but we do say "skank" and for us, it means a dirty person as well as a woman who will have sex with basically anyone. A loose or cheap woman. A tart.

"Scrounge" for Pinky, means to borrow something from someone, like a cigarette for example. (A "ciggie" is a cigarette) But in America where I am, we say "scrounge" two ways:

A dirty person; a bum= "Did you see that scroungy man over there?"

To hunt around for something= "Let me scrounge around in my desk and find a pen."
