While you were out, battening down the hatches against roaring bushfires etc etc, I think Truthbringer (who I don't think I've met) brought truth or the half millionth post, whichever came first. Tombie posted something about it back a bit....

It's not too late for me to dig you out a celebratory cold tinnie though! You want one, Marie?

Yeah, that's what I reckoned.. so no actual hijack occurred. This thread has outlived it's original function.. but we, being the kind, generous FG folk we are, and creative and drop dead gorgeous with it, added a little extra life to it. :D

Sorry, Imladris, but anyone who goes round in a tight yellow bodysuit with red and white striped sleeves, and funny shoes.. can't really be considered sane, as we normally interpret the word. Never mind, can I line you up a glass of champers or would you prefer a big mac and fries? :sneaky:

One thing I find interesting, Diuretic is that the aristocratic lithp appears not only in English, but in French too, and possibly Spanish. ... Why is that????

Diuretic;514986 wrote: Inbreeding in the English and possibly the French I think Pam - I hasten to add not in the stout yeomanry just the dissolute aristocracy.

I did read once that - and this could be apocryphal - that one of the Spanish Kings had a lisp and so to avoid embarrassment it was decreed that the pronunciation should change to reflect the King's manner of speaking. As I said, it's probably a load of old cojones but who knows?I never aspired as high as yeoman, my lot in life is more serfish.

Here's a discussion of your lisping spaniard though:Tim Curnow dismisses the idea of a lisp, "or else there was a very, very

clever, very learned Spanish king. The Spanish interdental fricative turns

up everywhere that Latin historically had a 'c' [k] before a front vowel,

whereas wherever Latin had an 's' [s] before a front vowel, Spanish has an

/s/ [s]. So he managed only to lisp in all those words that were derived

from Latin words which historically had a [k] not an [s]... It's generally

thought that the story is something like this: At some point Spanish had two

different s sounds, an apical (from Latin s) and a laminal (from Latin k).

In an attempt to keep these two more clearly separate, the laminal moved

further and further forward, ending up interdental (that makes it sound like

it was deliberate, but you get the idea). But then I suppose it's faintly

possible that there was a king once who had a 'lisp' that meant that he said

the laminal (but not the apical) as interdental - but I don't think there's

any support for that view (or any way of testing it as a hypothesis)."The rest of the detail is at http://linguistlist.org/issues/11/11-2186.html and it's all interesting stuff.

God you know they did bugger off I think, sorry OM that was my fault, I was being flippant as usual. I also got a bit preoccupied with the poor moggie as well, she wasn't the main cat, but its still sad, I don't like to see any animal die that way, poor mite.
