Engineers Disregarded

Post by Bothwell »

Why for example if you were at a party would the comment of say an arts expert that he/she had no clue how the internal combustion engine worked draw amusing laughter but the admission of a mechanic that he knew not one word of Shakespeare condemn said mechanic to be thought of as dim. This may just be a british thing, I have had these agruments many times, I remember once asking an "Advertising Executive" to name anything on the dinner table that was not created by an engineer (excepting the food of course). Engineering is consistently devalued in this country, why, I have no idea. I can assure you that an engineering degree is as hard (IMO much harder) to obtain than a degree in the Arts or media studies or any of the other modern degrees.

Lets hear it for the engineers

Tis a sad thing but Engineers do get a bad rap and yes B Horray for Engineers, all my co-workers are engineers and they are brilliant. Granted they all come from Russia and are very different from North American Engineers. Here Engineers are the butt of jokes because they have the reputation of being dull. So smart they are dull. How untrue. My co-workers are fabulous individuals, and oh what I wouldn't give to have their brains.

Salute mates engineers are fabo.

Sounds kinda snobby, if you ask me. So, Bothwell, what would happen if I was standing at said party and said I had no clue how an internal combustion engine worked and also couldn't quote a single line of Shakespeare? But if anyone wanted to know the best way to make that 3-rail bank shot on the pool table or the best way to correct behavior problems in their dog, I'd be the one to ask.

My point is that everyone has the "stuff" they know and are good at. Anyone who thinks they are better because of what they know, is, IMO, not even worth wasting time with. Small minds with superiority complexes. I know a few of 'em. Blech!

Good point BR.

I think as long as you can carry on an intelligent conversation, there is not a thing to judged about. We are all wise in our own ways. That is why we are all unique imagine how dull we would be if we all liked the same things, knew the same things, worshipped the same things etc. Boring.

Sadly I think it's a British thing with a long history despite our engineering heritage. With Maggie Thatcher we had a prime minister that thought britain could be a service economy-servicing what? Used to be you get steered in to academic subjects, still too much empahise on going to university and not enough on practicalities. There is not a single industry or company in modern times that has been started by business graduates. PHD researchers get paid a pittance compared to thier american counterpart, no wonder they all emigrate.

the last thing Bothwell is is a snob. but he IS an engineer as well as brilliant writer, shakespearean and history scholar. and has a sense of humor to rival john cleese. i have absolutely NO bias here, this is strictly my objective opinion based on experience. :D what i LOVE is my Dad was an internationally known scientist, and has been deceased since 1987. :-1 so one day Bothwell calls me and tells me he just pulled up some of my Dad's formulae and they worked for him! i was so pleased! :)

LC you didn't honestly think that I was calling Bothwell a snob, did you? I was referring to the people who would look down their noses at others for not knowing Shakespeare.

Of course you knew I didn't mean him. Right? :yh_bigsmi

Engineeres are not revered reverently enough in the USA also! Many are under paid for the responsibility their jobs require of them. As was already pointed out, one has only to look around to acknowledge all of the surrounding Engineering feats afforded by Engineers that makes one's life more pleasurable! Why you can even thank the Engineer for designing the PC you're reading this little tidbit on!!! Certainly can't thank the "Arts or Media" Degrees ! :guitarist
