I currently live with my dad in our house.

He makes the house payments, I pay rent by covering the food and other household stuff.

I own my house, bought it when I was about 23 years old...ummm 16 years ago...I was a single mom of 1 (he was 2 then)....Now I'm a single mom of 3 and living in the house again. Unfortunately....I don't know how much longer I'll be here. I've had to re-finance and basically tap out of resources due to no child support for months at a time, now I am at a position that I may lose the house. I'm not looking for sympathy...just sharing and being honest. :-4

This thread is coincident with me spreadsheeting today what (among other details) I've earned and repaid on the mortgage and education since I bought my first house. I'm in my third and (hopefully) last property, I'm never going to be so stupid as to buy another. The mortgage has run up a half million dollars since it started and just beats the schooling costs. From now on I'll settle for either a tent or a rented room.

Who remembers Micawber? "I trust that the labour and hazard of an investigation - of which the smallest results have been slowly pieced together, in the pressure of arduous avocations, under grinding penurious apprehensions, at rise of morn, at dewy eve, in the shadows of night, under the watchful eye of one whom it were superfluous to call Demon, combined with the struggle of parental Poverty to turn it, when completed, to the right account, may be as the sprinkling of a few drops of sweet water on my funeral pyre. I ask no more. Let it be, in justice, merely said of me, as of a gallant and eminent Naval Hero, with whom I have no pretensions to cope, that what I have done, I did in despite of mercenary and selfish objectives."

I rent my house. As a single Mum I have no chance of buying unless I win the lottery! :)

I now rent a 2 bedroom apartment. My dreams of owning my own home were shattered 4 years ago. I purchased a historic property, down in Georgia. It was a commercial/ residential property. Struggled for 2 years to keep it. It was going to be my retirement. I lost my shirt, and had to sell it. My credit has been so damaged by the failure, that I will never be able to buy anything again. Its ok though. As long as whatever I rent has a spot where I can be outside, I can be happy. I did learn that without the back up funds to maintain and improve a property, it isnt such a joy, it is a horrible strain.

I am buying my small flat.....25 year year mortgage that will be paid off when I'm 85. It's half the cost of renting though and at least there are no restrictions on what you can do. (not many anyway) and the kids will benefit when I go.

Being at uni I rent at the moment with some friends and the way things are in this country it becomes increasingly more difficult to get a foot on the property ladder :-5
