Selective Parenting?
I'm not sure what to really call it.
Choosing the gender of your baby....or its eye color and such....is this a good thing or is it tampering with God/Nature/ethics/individuality?

we can do this now? Good lord is that not a bit extreme, I mean now we can genetically alter our babies.
Crazy, and what in the heck is wrong with what nature gives you? People blow me away.!!!!

I don't know much about this. I think there are certain disease that are only passed on to certain sexes. So I guess if for medical reasons, its acceptable to choose sex.
However as for the rest I think its weird!
Would I love my kids less, if say, they did not have blonde hair. I just don't see why people would want to.

I agree. I don't want to get religious, but when did we become God?

Let nature make the decisions. Saying that if we could manipulate good/bad genes then lets cut out the evil scum that plague our society. Imagine if we could dictate the nature of people wiping out evil that would be great.

I believe it can be a good thing, my sister in laws sister, gave birth to a fantastic little boy 11 years ago, there are only 33 children in the world that have the problem that he has, the longest one has lived to 19. His problem is due to a genetics problem, Liam's Mum & Dad have been told that if they had another child it would 100% have the same problem. Liam is constantly in and out of hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital in London saw the 1st case of scurvy with Liam in 25 years. Bless him he battles back each time, he attends a special school where he has learnt to sign, he can say a few words, not bad for a child that was written off, they also wanted permission to not resuscitate him, of course his parents would NEVER give permission for that.
What I'm trying to say is, that to see a child and family go through such pain when it could of been prevented, that is a good thing.
But the problem is people always forget the good reasons for it, before we know it there will be clinics trying to play God. I say that to reduce genetic diseases it can only be a good thing but not to determine the sex of a child, people just ought to thank God they have been blessed with a healthy child.

As you say, Suzy, there is a vast difference between allowing genetic selection (not genetic modification) to let a couple have a healthy child they could not ordinarily have and using genetic selection to allow parents to select cosmetic features (colour of hair / eyes etc.) of their offspring.
As always, there is a viable middle ground to be found.

But why exactly would it be considered wrong to use this method for determining how your kid will look or what sex it will be?
And if you don't subscribe to the idea of God, then is it still wrong? Why!
Red wants to know!!:wah:
Seriously though, I do.

I could never believe that these people get the procedures right 100% of the time, what happens to a couple that decide that they want a son, to only find out that at 16 weeks they are expecting a girl, do they have an abortion? Adopt their baby, abandon them, it still happens over the world. Why can't these people accept that they have been given a gift??
What happens if a child isn't pretty enough, doesn't have the right colour hair/eyes, a high enough IQ, do these folks get to play God?? Thing is Red the rich think they can buy most things, that will happen with children too, it's wrong.
A parent should love their child no matter how they look, if they want a pretty doll then 'd suggest that that is what they invest in.

The safety of the species lies in the diversity of our gene pool. Allow parents to select "popular" characteristics or traits that people believe to be beneficial then you could very rapidly narrow the available range beyond that which we need to survive in times of crisis.
