She's full of it! Dog fighting is an everyday sport in the south? Bull hockey! :-5
Moonshining maybe:D, but not dog fighting!
I live in the south and it wasn't and isn't an acceptable standard of entertainment
Where did she grow up anyway?
I like her, I just think she is looking for an excuse for him. He is not excused!

Are these people that stupid? Or do they do it for ratings? Oh well I never liked her anyways.

Somebody should remind her that RACISM has been an every day thing
in the South, too...

My God.
I didn't know Whoopi was that ignorant.
I will never support her again. What trash.

You guys get offended over everything!!!!!! It actually is true! Dog Fighting isn't really that odd in the south! My in laws say its pretty common. What he did was wrong, and Whoopi never said other wise, what she said is that its a part of life down there for some people!

You tsk tsk all you want... If she had reacted when Joy Behar said
something about torture and murder of dogs, I MIGHT be inclined to
cut her a little slack. IF. Something along the lines of, oh... I dunno...
"You're right, my God what was I thinking?" Whether something is
COMMON doesn't make it RIGHT. It was still AGAINST THE LAW. Much
more importantly, I think, to consider... this guy HUNG and/or DROWNED
innocent creatures? How can anybody come even close to defending
such?
She apparently said other things, too, I'm waiting to see if I can get a
Youtube clip or something, the one I have includes GRAPHIC photos
of dogs so I have chosen not to post that. YET.

Hi Val:-4...so good to see you...hope all is well.
I agree with you. I love Whoppie but she is wack-a-doodle at times. Just because one says it's a normal occurance someplace doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Give me a break Sweet Tooth before you ever tsk me again.
Damn straight I'm judging and that is my call. I don't CARE what you think is common in the south, it's ignorant to say an otherwise intelligent (ha!) man tortured an animal because he couldn't figure out it was wrong on account of where he grew up. That does not wash in the south or anywhere else.

Today she is all about saying how she wasn't defending him. Hmm. What I heard sure sounded like a defense - why else even mention it?
Here is a wonderful video made by a friend of mine. While I think that it is fabulous and should be seen by every single person who labels a pit bull an aggressive dog or any person who defends dog fighting, or any person who has to serve on a jury about a dog fighter or the judge who has to decide what the sentence should be - it is very, very GRAPHIC.
Permission to crosspost as long as letter and link to the video are together.
==================================================
The Realities of Dogfighting was difficult for me to make on many levels...
For one, it is such a underground "event" that I found myself having trouble
finding all the information that I felt I needed to make a complete
educational video.. As I delved deeper in my research on dogfighting, my heart broke
with each picture, each video clip, with each rescue story that at one point,
I struggled to continue with this video and even then, I took about a month
off and stayed away from it. What kept me going was the remarks I constantly
heard from people I work with, on the street when I'm walking my dogs, on
the internet, on football forums, " They are just dogs, what's the big deal."
Everything. The trauma, the neglect, the cruelty these dogs go through for a
"dog man's" entertainment is horrendous. It truly takes a sick person to
gamble at the lives of dogs.
Secondly, my worry was that I didn't want it to put the Bully Breeds in a
bad light... I felt like I had to make it clear that these dogs were being
exploited by their handlers to be fighting dogs as well as show that not all of
these dogs will want to fight when thrown into a pit. I hope I succeeding in
that...
Lastly, I have always been taught to end whatever you are doing on a good
note and the fact that The Realities of Dogfighting is so heavy on the heart, I
wanted to end on a lighter, happier note. I found 2 rottweilers and 2
pitbulls, who are Survivors of Dogfighting and tell their heartbreaking stories.
Their human families are just as remarkable. These families spent countless
hours working with these dogs, and spending their first year in and out of
hospitals to bring these dogs back to health, and caring for them after
countless surgeries. Listening to the stories these owners were telling me had me
bawling, I wish I could have gone into more detail on their stories in the
video... These owners are heroes, the tremendous up and down, and the constant
training and working with these dogs was hard, but now, years later for all of
them, they have great dogs and wonderful ambassadors for their respected
breeds...So, I stand up and clap my hands for them and tell them, " Thank You,
and if only in my eyes, you are a hero to me."
Thank You,
Linnea Shirley

Im suprised she supported Vick.I like whoopie, but I do not agree with her opinions.Dog fighting is a horrid and disgraceful thing. There is nothing entertaining about it.Its a inhumane act that should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

ALL animal fighting is wrong and should be abolished in a civilized society.
We're not talking clogging, we're talking about something where a living being is tortured to death and has no option to leave. I realize people are culturally ignorant the world over but even in Spain and PR there are people waking up every day to the fact that their fighting/animal cruelty is wrong.

Dog fighting is disgusting. I don't agree with Whoopi at all, although that doesn't mean I will refuse to view her movies or anything. I suppose she's entitled to her opinion just as we are ours...
Now, as to the practice being common in the South. Well, I'm from the deep south and it's certainly not tolerated. Sure, there are those that attempt to get away with it, but the law enforcement keeps a pretty good eye out for it, and when caught they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Personally, I can't see what anyone gets out of watching that sort of "show". It's nothing more than a massacre and it's horrible to train a dog to do that, then put them through that sort of torture. Sickening. Vick got just what he deserved and I'm glad the NFL respected animal rights and suspended him.

I think she was attempting to come up with an explanation for his behavior, not an excuse. However, we have to look below the surface of the actions of this man. The dog torture and fighting is indicitive of a cruel and sick personality, with no regard for life, of any kind. I think the dog fighting is just the tip of the iceburg with this nut. I have said it before... celebrities get to the point where they think they can say anything. Whoopi is very funny, and I have always liked her as an entertainer. She does however go out of her way to draw attention to herself, with bizarre hair and clothes etc.... She also loves controversy, and creating a stir. Like years ago when she was involved with Ted Dansing. She looked so bizarre next to him.. it was almost ridiculous.
