FG Debates

Post by Pheasy »

I am getting increasing upset with the way certain debates are being handled lately. It is my understanding that debates are discussions where people can express their understanding, beliefs and feelings regarding a subject. Not an opportunity to belittle and insult each other!

We have a wide range of people here, from all walks of life, with many different experiences, knowledge and beliefs. I love to see a good debate as it allows me to see others points of view and experiences, also to share my own. I have found out a lot from such debates and have had my view changed on more than a few subjects. It helps to broaden our outlook and understanding of life and individuals.

I therefore find it very upsetting when such debates are used to air personal grievances against others. I understand that there are many subjects that people feel very strongly about - but do they have to be so insulting when getting their views across.

Copied from the 'General Site' Rules....

1.1 No "Flaming": Please do not post any messages that harrass, insult, belittle, threaten or flame another member or guest.

I also have very strong feeling towards people who put others on their 'ignore list' just because that person does not agree with them. It shows a very blinkered and tunneled view of life IMO.

I welcome the thoughts of others on this subject, as thats the kinda person I am - just say it nicely please. ;):)

I don't agree with your post................just kiddin'!!:yh_giggle

I just thought I'd post my non-argumentitive comments before mud gets to slingin'....I hope that doesn't happen, but history proves otherwise in these type of well meaning "let's keep the peace" threads.

I look at it this way...there are people that LOVE to debate, and that is fine...and I agree with Pheasy, I've learned ALOT from reading the debate threads. There are also others that will defend their stand on a subject till the very end. Sometimes it gets onto a personal level, because of the passion of the poster. I look at it as being human. I don't think this will ever end tbh...because people are people....we just handle situations differently, I try to stay away from those subjects that will get my blood pressure boiling...thats just me.:)

Oh I forgot to add ... during my time at FG I have learned that when 'certain' people reply to threads you know (before even reading them) that they will make you laugh.

You are a breath of fresh air, and a good laugh Jimbo :-6

I agree Wendy. I just wish people would stop and think about the feelings others when replying - thats not directed at you Wendy - you always have the ability to state your feelings/experiences without insulting people. I admire that :-4

When I see posts getting out of hand and personal, I just can't be bothered reading on. I love a good healthy debate, it shouldn't get personal though.

To be honest pheasant, I have been here long enough to see a lot of debates get completely out of control and for people to turn on each other personally. Its not very nice, and I try to stay out of it as much as possible, but its one of the realities of how people intereact on the net. They thing when one gets out of hand is to just not enter into the thread if it upsets you, and if you think something is really out of line then report it, as there are rules here and they are enforced. Thats my tuppence anyways.

Putting someone on ignore is out of order in my view,

why are people that you met over the net on peoples ignore list :-3

I stay put of these so called debates, as Kaz said i feel they are out of my league also.

I just love to get on with everyone, and I have learnt so much from the people here.

Now lets all kiss and make up :-4

There are a small number of people here who like to dominate any discussion. It's pretty pointless to try and 'debate' with them, though I guess many of us get drawn in from time to time. Mea culpa! Waste of time, really. I'm a peaceable person and have enough real problems to deal with in daily life not to want unpleasantness in my leisure time.

It's just dawn here, and the magpies are going beserk with happiness. Aussie magpies are heaps uglier than their brothers and sisters in Europe and North America - but their song is spectacular.

My youngest has an important job interview in Paris today. Send support waves, please!!!!!

Hugs to all !!!!

And if you feel that has happening all you need to do is tell them they are on your ignore list.

If they were truly arguing simply for the sake of argument they'll leave the thread if they think you aren't listening.

The ignore list is actually recommended as a first step to dealing with a problem if you find someone is either annoying you every time you read them or seems to be harassing you.

If you feel baited then telling them they are on your ignore list encourages them to cease addressing you in a thread. I usually ignore people without having to add them to a list and have only used it to prevent PMs from being sent.

As far as personal attacks go, it helps to realise that other people reading lose respect for a member that posts personal attacks so they already look bad even if you don't respond.

I've never put anyone on ignore regardless of how low they sink because I feel that I need to be able to judge the character of those that use personal attacks to get a point over. Koan is absolutely right - make a tit of yourself and everyone notices. (isn't that right Jimbo????:wah:)

I have difficulty understanding why some posters take things posted here so personally. At the end of the day if someone posts a hate post against me that I have never met, am not likely to meet- I don't care. Even if I do personally know someone that dislikes me (and there are some) It's up to me to decide how much their opinion matters to me. Total strangers I couldn't care less. People I know why- should I waste energy disliking them? Being civil and nice to them is much more fun and really annoys them.

She's really nervous LMG - but she's used to stage fright. When she was younger she was an elite gymnast - totally awful to be with just before any serious event, but the adrenalin rush was somehow part of her driving force. Her film and television quals are impeccable, but her French is only middling - the outcome will depend on what the employers are most after. I've promised her, for Christmas, a week's French language residential course - total immersion. She's going to do that whatever the result of this particular interview.
