hmmmmm not a mod but what an up tight bunch if they wont' accept your little snippets. I don't think that is tolling, I think trolling is posting utter useless garbage.

Again I am not a mod, that is just my opinion.

Not at all!

Trolling = Deliberately posting inflammatory material or remarks designed to upset and insult members. For example, let's say I know a member is Jewish, then I post ProNazi propaganda just to get an emotional reaction from him. Or say I know that someone is rabidly anti-abortion, so I post something like, "I'm pro-death! There's too many people in the planet anyway!" even though I don't really believe that.

That's trolling. It's not just disagreeing, or debating, it's being deliberately mean-spirited.

Really good trolls can actually make it seem like they are discussing and debating, but you'll notice that they keep coming back to the one statement that they know will make everyone mad.

Trolls are usually desperate for attention. No matter what the subject matter, it will keep coming back to what they want and need. Personal attention, usually of the inappropriate kind. Yo may even see some "unwarranted disclosure." For example you ask them how they are feeling and they tell you that their mate slept with someone else last night and proceed to give you WAY more details than yo0u want or need.

So no...You aren't trolling, especially if what you post is upbeat and funny.

There's also 'flaming" = calling others vulgar or profane names, and

"Spamming" = posting useless information, web-scams, or posts with no value what so ever. Like posting "post" or "thread bump" or just talking to yourself in the threads to increase your post count.

General "netiquette" says that in a forum, you are supposed to let someone reply to your post before you post again. It's considered "bad form" to do that, but it's not enforced. We break that "rule" a lot around here, but we still stay to the spirit of a forum pretty well, "a place to exchange and discuss ideas freely."

Hope that helps!

I always get the image of this evil little being with a crunched up face, huge pointed ears tand resides under a bridge who hates goats, when I see the word troll.

Buttercup I think you are far from it.

I think sometimes there is a kind of jealousy that people start to feel over the forum when someone new joins and has enough personality to dive in and start sharing their stories and jokes. The Forum Garden says "the friendliest place on the internet" on the home page and, I think, that is pretty accurate. There are a small number, as in any group, who feel it is a privilege to be accepted here and it must be earned. I feel it is an honour for the current members to have new members join and a have a certain amount of pride when they feel confident enough to post. It means that we have helped create the friendly environment that was intended. The more people post the happier I am being here.

So, I guess, my point is: Ignore them, they're just jealous. :D

BTW Great description of troll, Jives. It is fairly specific and buttercup is definately not IT.

It sounds more like they are accusing you of "spamming" than "trolling". Spamming does include doing just copy & paste posting, without contributing anything yourself to the topic(s). It gives an impression that you find stuff from other websites and just 'plop' it into the forum threads, then leave the topic, or 'plop' in more copied stuff.

The people at that forum sound like a bunch of snooty dorks. At least the one(s) calling you a troll. Posting light-hearted and fun stuff, even just a copy & paste, doesn't earn the "flaming" you are getting. There is a jerk or two (or more) at many forums (FG is an exception, it adverts as the friendliest forum, and it is IMO!), and they like to jump all over newbies to intimidate them.

They often have a "flame-buddy" or two that try and gang up on the unsuspecting newbie. Don't let them bully you around so that you leave the forum - at least until you find out if they do have so many jerks that they ruin the forum beyond hope of enjoyment!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_trollThat's a neat article, I like it.

"Many times a person will post a sincere message that they are emotionally sensitive about and trolls know that the biggest way to upset them is to falsely claim that they are a troll"....

"Quite often, trolls have found traditional trolling tactics so overused and commonplace that they have to disguise their trolling to make it effective; and this disguising is largely done recently by falsely accusing anyone they can of being trolls."...

Good stuff. There's far fewer trolls out there than there are accusations.

Of course, there's plain disrespect, but that's a another issue.

Buttercup, if it were me, I'd make sure that any copy-paste I did was into the context of a post that had some original material of my own as well, and that I put "I found this recently and liked it" before the quoted stuff. If you do that, the material's still there to cheer people up, and get them laughing, but it's got your own thoughts there as well. Value-added messages.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Norway

Once upon a time there were three billy goats, who were to go up to the hillside to make themselves fat, and the name of all three was "Gruff."

On the way up was a bridge over a cascading stream they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a great ugly troll , with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.

So first of all came the youngest Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

"Trip, trap, trip, trap! " went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll .

"Oh, it is only I, the tiniest Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, with such a small voice.

"Now, I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! pray don't take me. I'm too little, that I am," said the billy goat. "Wait a bit till the second Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Well, be off with you," said the troll.

A little while after came the second Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"Oh, it's the second Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, who hadn't such a small voice.

"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! Don't take me. Wait a little till the big Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Very well! Be off with you," said the troll.

But just then up came the big Billy Goat Gruff .

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap! went the bridge, for the billy goat was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him.

"Who's that tramping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"It's I! The big Billy Goat Gruff ," said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.

"Now I 'm coming to gobble you up," roared the troll.

Well, come along! I've got two spears,

And I'll poke your eyeballs out at your ears;

I've got besides two curling-stones,

And I'll crush you to bits, body and bones.

That was what the big billy goat said. And then he flew at the troll, and poked his eyes out with his horns, and crushed him to bits, body and bones, and tossed him out into the cascade, and after that he went up to the hillside. There the billy goats got so fat they were scarcely able to walk home again. And if the fat hasn't fallen off them, why, they're still fat; and so,

Snip, snap, snout.
