I was one of the best scouts they'd ever had in these parts. I didn't have a uniform, just badges sewn together. :D

Especially for you oh Fuzzy one I shall answer your question.

I was a Brownie, only for a year 'cos the Brownie pack wasn't started in my village until I was 10, but because I was one of the oldest I was the sixer for the Leprechauns. I loved it but couldn't go on to Guides because that was in town and I had no transport :-1

My step-daughter's were Brownies and Guides but I couldn't send my daughter as one of the leaders is my sister-in-law who is a cow and would have been a nasty biatch to her!!!

I was a brownie and when my older daughter was in school i was a daisy scout leader. When we went to sign the little one up for it last year, there wasn't enough interest in it apparently 'cause after the 'interest metting' there never was another one...
Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!

You're uncovering archaeological levels that have remained undisturbed many years. Wolves roamed the land, savage picts lurked behind every barrow, piskies repaired boots overnight in exchange for a glass of milk.

When I was a cub I had a major choice each week, given that it invariably rained. Should I spend my train fare on a ride home or should I spend it on chips and scratchings and eat them while I walked back? I never knew until I reached the chip shop. They were the same price, the train fare and the chips and scratchings, one groat. A groat was an ancient unit of currency worth a third of a shilling and in my time it was often called fourpence instead.

My favourite memory is my granny discovering how much the chips and scratchings cost and shouting out "an entire groat? For a penn'orth of chips and scratchings? We live in sorry times indeed".

What I learned that I used in later life is not to exclaim at rising prices, it shows how old you are.

I can tie lots of different type of knot, too. I used to put my daughter out the window on a double bowline harness so she grew up with a head for heights and an appreciation of the value of a well-tied knot. Parenting's simple when you know how.

I was a brownine for 3 years, girl guide for another 3 years, then Jr Leader for 2 years. In my adult life I was a sparks (pre brownie here) for 2 years. Loved it all.

I learned a lot about a lot of things, loved the camping and outdoors parts, learned to set up camp in the middle of nowhere and survive, learned to snowshoe, learned about the stars, how to follow the moon, sun, stars etc for direction, learned how to read a compass, learned that girls and boys are equal when it came to most of lifes ... "things" except for maybe physical strength, and that girls just have to do things a little differently ahahaha and I don't mean peeing in the woods ok we all know that is a given.

I also learned the basics of cooking and sewing. Learned about friendships and fairness, respect and it was also my first taste of international exposure when we learned about guiding in (back then) far away places like sri lanka and australia.

I have tossed around the idea of being a leader again, but havne't got there quite yet.

I think guiding and scouting is an amazing all round life training every child should have the opportunity to experience.

I haven't written up any of my experience which i shall do so now because it's experience has been rather important.

i didn't do brownies but my older sister did.

It all started with my sisters wedding. We had a choice be in our sisters wedding or have the money spent on us in another area...........I chose Guides because my friends at school reckoned it was awsome.

After the initial intro badges and tests I was enrolled and became a seconder of a six on the same night............two certificates two bagdes !!! yay me!!

One of our leaders was a woman who was one of the first girl guides in Australia

(guiding in australia yep "chicky " was an old duck but she used to tell us how she went through two wars and a depression and how what she learnt in the early days helped her. A great lesson for us because she told us we'll never know what the future holds for us and we should "be prepared", as she was :)

I became a flag bearer and jr leader and then went onto ranger guides.

Anyway as you have said, I learnt a hell of a lot too . alot of the farmers around here are impressed by my abilities, and it's all put down to "she must have farmers in the family " Well it was guides that taught me more than a can think of, and especially to cope with new circumstances and projects.. they are the ones responsible for lot of my abilities.

My most memorable experience was a 'scout versus guide' weekend .

one of these events entailed the boys making their own rafts and the guides had to (in any sneaky way they could think up) sink them. We didn't think that flour bombs were going to do the trick so we layed ropes in the water and as the boys came around the river bend we'd lift the rope up and knock them all off their rafts :wah::wah:....................As they swam to shore we bombarded them with flour bombs .

I became a leader for a short time about 20 years ago but couldn't stick with it . I looked up the history of the promise and cross referenced it . And I in all good conscience couldnt' make that promise again.

I do hope they change guiding and it's direction cause in our world today I'm not comfortable with what a girl has to promise.

this is our promise.

"I promise that I will do my best:

to do my duty to God, to serve the Queen and my country;

to help other people; and

to keep the Guide Law."

the law

A Guide is loyal and can be trusted.

A Guide is helpful.

A Guide is polite and considerate.

A Guide is friendly and a sister to all Guides.

A Guide is kind to animals and respects all living things.

A Guide is obedient.

A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties.

A Guide makes good use of her time.

A Guide takes care of her own possessions and those of other people.

A Guide is self-controlled in all she thinks, says and does.

It's not the whole lot but aspects of it that seem to me to be outdated .

and this is why If you make Guiding and scouts continuilly patriotic this is what happens

Wow eh what a global organization, I was saddened to see poor Hungary was at one time banned :( I tell ya my ancestors are always getting a bad rap.

Yeah the guiding law is a bit over the top for todays women eh.

I personally left the organization when stupid Canadian Law told me I could no longer allow a hug from a child without keeping my arms open. Yep about 10 years ago I said I am sorry I can no longer be a compassionate leader to girls under the age of 7 when all eyes are on me to make sure I do not touch a child inappropriately. I knew if ever a child came to me crying with a scraped knee and needed to be consoled I could not do that child justice... lets face it small children don't get enough "appropriate hugs" these days. I was deeply saddened when I left but I just could not show up every day wondering about what I could potentially be accused of.
