When you are apart from someone you love romantically, does absence make the heart grow fonder or is it out of sight, out of mind?

i miss Bothwell all the time, we are 4300 miles apart. but we talk several times a day and night, email, and make plans to be together again, something to look forward to. i believe our hearts grow closer each day. as he tells me, it will be worth the wait. :)

I agree. I've been in the same situation and you just want to see them more and more as time goes by. I did experience a little less pain after a few weeks away but no less love.

Romantic love? Humbug! Sentimental self-deception would be a better description.

I think it depends entirely how good your relationship is to begin with! Being away from a new love, or a very strong one, will just do you in! Conversely, if it's an unpassionate relationship, who cares? Had both, know what I"m talkin' 'bout!

A person that puts another person out of mind because they are out of sight, would do the same even when that person is in sight.

Good point, Lon.

Hubs has to go out of town from time to time. I miss him like crazy. I always think of all times I don't truly appreciate him...when he is there.

They're finding out now that no Christmas is coming. They're just waking up, I know just what they'll do. Their mouths will hang open a minute or two, then the Whos down in Whoville will all cry, "Boo Hoo.'

Ohhhh, I could so get the hang of this.

My foolish heart would like to believe " abscence makes the heart grow fonder" and Im certain thats true for some. For me however, it hasnt worked that way. In regard to who I thought was my truest love, it surely was out of sight out of mind because , he moved on and forgot about me. Despite the bitter dissapointment, after 4 and a half years.. I still open my e mail thinking there could be a message. I hand out all this cynical advice to others.. but see Im still an aging romantic deep in my soul.

Really good responses. Even from Spot-Grinch :D .

Lon, wow! That one hit me right in the gut, and I'm really glad. See, the man and I are working opposite schedules these days and I miss him like crazy. I thought it'd get better, but it gets worse every day instead.

Sooo, I've been all dramatic and pouty about it. My situation doesn't compare to many of yours and I feel a bit ashamed. I also feel really good about the things you've all said, because it brought me to a point where I can just love him and not bring any resentment into it. (the jerk - kidding!)

On the out of sight, out of mind thing...is that maybe compartmentalization? Or something much worse, as Lon has said?

I couldn't comment. I've never been in love or dated, for that matter. I will comment when the time has come. ;)
