Bonnet de douche always serves me well, I get my inspiration from Del Boy!!

I've found that trying to at least order your beer/bread in the local language helps, people tend to smile at my crap accent but at least they're smiling!!:wah:

Went to Germany with OH not my fav place or fav people but OH said 'dont worry I speak German' and of course as he had lived and worked there for 6 months I believed him.

We were there a week and he made me talk to everyone shops, cafes, hotel staff everyone.

Then on the last day we were there we went to a bar Oh strolls up to the bar and says 'zwei pils bitte' and gets 2 beers.

I said is that it ? Is that the full extent of your German?

No he says.... zwei pils bitte and ich leibe dich ( i love you) and Ive never had a problem getting by!

jimbo;909550 wrote: without wanting to sound big headed it always amazes me just how well i get on with people (when i dont try to annoy them:D) when i travel abroad not even the lingo is a problem the trick is to make out like you are really trying to speak their lingo and just be yourself , when we were in ibiza they spoke spanish i since my head injury a few years ago cant even remember the words of a song let alone a new language but to get around the problem i use words that sound spanish :sneaky:

eg bonnus seeass (say it as it sounds i really have no idea as its spelt )

was the greeting every morning by our lovely middle aged spanish waitress she really was great

so i said baunes aries which i believe is the capital of brazil (correct me chezzer and spot )

the waitress laughs corrects me , tries to teach me a new word or two and bingo a friend is made

i found this also works with just a smile and saying things like bon jovi and mucho nacho's etc they have no idea what you are on about but thats the idea they think you are trying to communicate and so they take the time to talk back , i did try once in france with a phrase book to really talk to them but when they talked in french back i had no idea what they said so thus ended the conversation trust trust me talking jimboease is the best way to get to know these people

any way back to my point how well do you think you could cope in a strange country ???

i often watch this programme and i think yup i could do that has any one else seen this show ?? its about a guy who goes across the states on $5 a day and just makes friends yup i reckon i could do that :)

I spent time in France with an ex-policeman who didn't just get by with a vocabulary of fifty words and acting like he was starring in Allo Allo, he had the locals believing he could speak French perfectly. It was all the waving the hands and rolling the shoulders and eyes and mumbling loudly in a French accent which that did it. I bet Jimbo's Spanish is in the same class.

Jimbo, you crack me up! Bon Jovi? Buenos Ares? :wah:

Chezzie, yes, I agree about Carol! She speaks her own language and I'm always learning something! :)

I have only traveled to Mexico which may or may not count much in the way of traveling but I know maybe five words of Spanish. I smiled A LOT and said please and thank you. Mostly though, it's the smile. You know how they say people smile in only one language. I believe that. :-6

Oh yeah. At work they passed out these papers that showed us what to say in Spanish to those who call.

Such as: What were they wearing? Where are you hurt? How many people were there?

I looked at them and stuck out my tongue. I said, well, when they answer me, how the blazes am I gonna know what they said?????:-5

So now we have access to Language Line. But I got an intrepreter with an attitude problem once and had to tell him to back off, it wasn't him we pulled over.:-5:D
