Medieval times seen a huge dependence on the church and one form to keep knights from ransacking every village and doing unspeakable deeds were monks and people of the clergy gathering many bones, more notably skulls, of deceased clergymen and forcing them to heed their teachings of peace and righteousness...

The Knights Templar were an order created by the Pope to serve as body guards of many traveling monks and Christian pilgrims from which they'd formed there own sort of order that stemmed into a sort of mercantile type fortuitous virtue...The Knights Templar formed the backbone of what eventually became the banking system in medieval Europe...

Since the monks themselves were sworn to poverty, but had the strength of a large and trusted international infrastructure behind them, nobles would occasionally use them as a kind of bank or power of attorney. If a noble wished to join the Crusades, this might entail an absence of years from their home. So some nobles would place all of their wealth and businesses under the control of Templars, to safeguard it for them until their return. The Order's financial power became substantial, and the majority of the Order's infrastructure was devoted not to combat, but to economic pursuits.

By 1150, the Order's original mission of guarding pilgrims had changed into a mission of guarding their valuables through an innovative way of issuing letters of credit, an early precursor of modern banking. Pilgrims would visit a Templar house in their home country, depositing their deeds and valuables. The Templars would then give them a letter which would describe their holdings. Modern scholars have stated that the letters were encrypted with a cipher alphabet based on a Maltese Cross; however there is some disagreement on this, and it is possible that the code system was introduced later, and not something used by the medieval Templars themselves. While traveling, the pilgrims could present the letter to other Templars along the way, to "withdraw" funds from their account. This kept the pilgrims safe since they were not carrying valuables, and further increased the power of the Templars. wiki

You'd like to read "The Da Vinci Code"...

I've seen the movie and have not yet read the book but from what I hear the book is way better than the movie...

The Da Vinci Code is a controversial mystery/detective novel by US author Dan Brown, published in 2003 by Doubleday. It follows symbologist Robert Langdon as he investigates a murder in the Louvre, and discovers a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus having been married to and fathering children with Mary Magdalene. Jimbo, when I was 6 I had my own business. A Kool Ade stand on the corner of 29th & Hampshire. Its all about location in the food service industry and brother let me tell you I had location.

I had it all. Construction workers, the fire dept., babysitters.

The world was my oyster.

It was King Phillip IV who accused the Knights Templar of being blasphemes upon his developing a debt with the Knights Templar...It's widely accepted that King Phillip IV brought about these charges because of this debt as well as to heighten his support to go to war with the Flemish among others...His intentions being to disband them...He succeeded...From what I've read there's alot of controversy related to the Knights Templar...

Sorry sometimes I confuse the Knights Templar with the Teutonic Order and other mercenary Knights...

Certainly the overthrow of the KT was a put up job and nothing to do with heresy. They were the bankers of Europe and both the French king and the Pope own them loads (IIRC this was at the time of the Avignon Popes and the two were closely related).

It was rumoured, however, that the KT top brass were tipped off and escaped with much of the cash.

There is a KT meeting place in the town next to our old house and the layout and style appear very Mithraic - maybe they incorporated the Mysteries into their rites although their beliefs do appear to have been straight Christian.

Well I've had a look round roslin chapel and didn't find anything. As tio the rumours of strange initiations and rituals torture anyone and they will tell you what they wat to hear.The Knights Hospitaller- are worth a look as well even if they did back the english in the scots/english wars of independence. They stuck around to save europe from the dastardly turks

this is a very interesting thread JImbo..i read alot of this when the davinci code came out..i cant remember where..in the bible this is written and in no way paraphrasing..its out of a shotty memory..i am pretty sure Ted would know.in one part of the bible Jesus arrives in a town..and Mary magdalene greets him publically..in that time frame from what i have read only a man's wife had the privelege of doing that..

Curse you jimbo your tangential asides are very distracting. I've just spent the last half hour exploring all the themes.

The bible as we know it is basically an edited version of the original chosen by a bunch of power seeking misogynist churchmen. I've always thought the real story was potentially more gripping than the fantasy. Course that viewpoint gets me in a lot of trouble and not so long ago burned for being a heretic.

I've always been interested in this subject Jimbo. I've read loads of books and watched numerous documentaries and seen most of the films....fictional....

Everyone has a different opinion depending on their 'leaning' .....political, religious, scientitific, historical.. I find it all interesting but have never been desperate to come to any conclusions.

On the Mary Magdalene thing.....very interesting too. Been several documentaries about her recently.....so much speculation. GOOD THREAD....
