Smoking Ban - 1st July

You can not smoke in bars and restaraunts here. You get use to it. I see alot of people outside the bar smoking. So, they smoke outside and everyone outside the facility has second hand smoke. Do not get me wrong, I smoke again. I just think it is wrong to make adults stand outside a facility to smoke.

Doesn't matter. You still can get cancer. So, as long as we can blame/shun another human being in the process, that's OK to outlaw, right?? You're talking to someone whose mother died from emphysema. I'm not proud that I smoke & would like to quit. But, I also think we could have separate establishments. We have them around here. Give people a choice.

I read in the paper today, that a residential nursing home has built a smoking room well away from the main buliding, for the smokers there. The official that went to inspect it was appalled at how comfortable and cosy they had made it! Stating that they were making it easier and inducing or encouraging their residents to carry on smoking:-2 Now i thought the ban was brought in to force to protect the health of people especially non smokers who shouldnt have to breath in other people smoke, but it seems they are not satisfied with that, but want to actually stop people smoking or make it very difficult and uncomfortable for them to do? i know smoking is stupid, but should the government/Council/Police punish me for it? Surely its enough to banish us outside and even criminilse us ( fines etc.) I have never been in trouble with the law in my life, i would hate to think i would be on record as being fined, for something like smoking in the wrong place:-5

This two-faced behaviour by our vainglorious leaders is repulsive. They should have proper consideration for smokers and non-smokers, or go the whole hog and criminalise all smoking.

All true,we are now the new lepers of society.It will not be long before we will be even allowed to smoke in our homes.Already starting, as the new thing is if you are having work done in your home then you must not expose the workman to your smoke fumes as it is considered his place of work.

Someone said line us up and shoot us.I think they might as well.

I just cant get over the fact that the official was unhappy they had made the smoking room comfortable for them, The only ones going in there will be smokers, how dare he suggest that it should be less comfortable just because they smoke:-5 It annoys me so much how badly old people get teated in our country sometimes. regardless of the smoking issue

I don't really 'get' that statement, everyone knows that sun damage can cause skin cancer, which is why I protect myself with suncream and stay under the shade, I also never lay directly under the sun between 11am-3pm. Now if I chose to ignore the warnings and layed out in the sun all day, applied an oil then i'd be a fool to think that I may be one of the lucky ones that didn't get skin cancer.

I also know from the warnings that smoking can cause many health problems, which is why I chose to give up. If I decided 'I' want to take the risk, then I'd put that ciggerate to 'my' lips or if I wanted to risk having skin cancer 'I' would lay out in the sun, they would be 'my' choices, why should I suffer secondary smoke from someone who doesn't care enough about their health let alone mine

Okay, I am a smoker. I am not a militant smoker though. If a pub want to ban smoking, I won't smoke in the pub. Same for any business. The problem I see is that the gov. wants to regulate businesses even more. We have cigar bars here where people go in, buy cigars and light them up. They are specifically named So and So's Cigar bar. If the ban goes in here. No more cigar bars. I'm not a cigar smoker but this is ridiculous. If people don't want to go into public places with smoking, then don't. Nobody is forcing any restaurant or bar to allow smoking. In fact there are quite a few non smoking restaurants around here without a law.

I agree with you there.Now that could be the start of a whole new thread.A lot of so called care homes are a disgrace.Also if an elderly person is recovering in hospital and considered not capable of taking care of themselves they are not allowed to return to their homes but have to go into one of these places.Surely a home care package could be arranged for them so that they could end their days surrounded by all there own possesions and memories.I dread the day, if it ever happens to me.

i smoke too but im pretty good at not inflicting smoke on others, i woudnt dream of smoking in someones home, who dosnt smoke, i work in a fish and chip shop and cafe where we're not allowed to anyway and i can go for a long time without a ciggy.

i know of people who've never smoked developing cancer but on the other hand my friends husband, who is 39yrs old has just been told he has the chest of a 60yr old heavy smoker cos he plays darts at top level and has spent many years playing darts in smokey pubs.

i did object to being told by a doctor that i MUST give up, specially when i saw him walking through town with a pipe in his mouth !!!!!!!!!

one rule for one................

i live in a town where there are a lot of night clubs, it will be interesting to see how they get on with the ban.

Well, it's pretty easy to steer clear of smokers too... at least here. You choose. They're giving no choices. If you know that someplace is a smoking establishment, you choose not to enter it. When you're outside, you choose not to stand near a smoker. I don't find non-smokers & choose to smoke right next to them. I'm considerate. Just as you have a choice to wear or not wear sunscreen, you should have a choice of where you patronize. If that establishment (not just eateries, as most of them already ban smoking) doesn't allow smoking, how many smokers do you see smoking in them? Most smokers aren't that inconsiderate. But we're being given no choices, whether we're inside or outside.

Our campus is going smoke-free as of the beginning of 2008. We won't be allowed to smoke inside or outside. I'm not smoking around anyone when I'm outside. It's not affecting anyone any more than the fuel from the cars here or the planes that are taking off from the major airport across the street. As I said earlier, I would like to quit. It's the idea of being dictated to quit, whether I want to or not.

One more thing... my grandmother died of mouth cancer a couple of years ago. The woman never smoked a day in her life. My grandfather didn't smoke either. Hhhmmm... wonder where that came from?

I'm not trying to be smart here, I'm just tired of being treated like a leper. I have rights, just like everyone else. I don't go to friends' homes & smoke in them, nor do I smoke in their cars. In fact, when I smoke outside, I usually walk away from the crowd to do so. But that's never good enough. It has to end somewhere.

I have never seen a pub which is non smoking, they don't exsist where we live, i don't have a problem with smokers, as long as it's not done near me

We have several here. It gives people a choice of where they'd like to visit.

I'm a smoker and I support the smoking ban. I would much prefer to smoke in the privacy of my garden because, for me, it's a stress relieving habit, and I don't want criticism and judgment from non smokers every time I light up...that's just more stress.

Over recent years I've tried hard to be a considerate smoker and not impose it on those who don't smoke, and I think the majority of smokers do the same. Does anyone seriously believe that we would want to be held responsible for someone else's ill health?

Yet, I think there's also a certain amount of "scapegoating" going on and that smokers are not responsible for as many of society's ills as are claimed. I'm sure that, in years to come, another group will be targeted in much the same way that smokers are now, but hopefully I won't be a member of that one.

That's what I do at work. I go outside & have one just to get out of the office & away from the computer & phone for a few minutes. I'm not hurting anyone by smoking outside, but they're going to completely ban it on campus, inside & out.

I think its fine outside, as long as its not in a very public area like a restraunt patio or something. It has to be open so it doesn't bother nonsmokers.

Bus shelters too. I was really pissed at some tart who lit up when I had Jade with me. Sitting right next to me she was!

Most pubs children have to be out by 7.00, I don't see a problem with children going to pub's, no different than going to a restaurant IMO

Yes mine they have to be out by 9 but aren't allowed in certain areas at all which I totally agree with. Some go there to relax and don't want kids running about.
