NOPE!

Not if there was DNA proof.

Snowfire made this comment: I am not in favour of the death penalty. It doesnt serve as a deterent one little bit

Is there an effective deterent for those who decide to commit a crime? If not the death penalty, or life inprisonment................what is it?

If my child commited a crime, I would first be hurt beyond words. I would be saddened for the victim and the victim's family. But, my child would have to take the consequences...whatever a judge or jury decided. Depending on the nature of the crime, what my child did was wrong, cruel, against the law, whatever. I would always love my child, but there are consequences for actions, and the child would have to take responsibilty for those actions.

If it were your own husband/dad/brother/cousin that was killed how would you feel? This post at least answers the opening posts question of what would you do if it were one of your own and thankyou Kaz for being right on the point.

Naturally i can't go into details other than to say that as his family predicted he has told the one person they believed he'd confide in, everything today. Everything. He's been honest and that person has spent much time with him today and has looked into his eyes. There will have to be a fair trial and 100% proof, that's all for now.

In these cases, it's very easy to assume guilt due to previous convictions. If they are guilty of previous, it does not always automatically mean that that they have to be guilty of something so awful. Sometimes, even with previous, there is a point where some-one will stop and can not cross that boundary.

I understand why people would want capital punishment re-introduced. I understand peoples anger and peoples desire to have the ultimate justice. If it was that ultimate justice alone, then its at least an honest wish

I just dont think it acts as a deterent. A huge majority of murders occur on the spur of the moment with absolutely no thought of the consequences, so those murders would not be deterred. Of those heinous crimes acted out by vile child murderers, serial killers and the like, I'm pretty sure no amount of methods we can imagine to put them to death, would deter these sick-of-the-mind individuals. Of those countries that have the death penalties, these acts still occur. They do in the US

You cant justfy the desire for capital punishment purely on the grounds of deterent. The statistics clearly show that it doesnt

There is also the problem of when more than one person is involved in the murder and they are all blaming each other. Who was the one who actually killed the victem? In so many cases this is very hard to determine. Only expert forensic evidence and cctv can help but then it's not foolproof. Only a Jury can decide.

if you believed in the death penalty, would you change your mind if it were your own flesh and blood on trial?

and as already said by myself so many times here, no.

- If one of my family members was a horrendous murderer?

-why should or why would I defend them after DNA proof?

-for what reason, because they are family?

I would be extremely hurt, upset, devastated, shocked and angry, but hey:

you intentionally murdered someone in cold blood?

.....damn right you pay for that.;)

If DNA proved 100% that they were guilty, then i don't have a problem with them being punished to the full extent of the law.
