I quit 30 years ago at age 24 after I grew tired of waking up in the morning hacking up dry blood. I had become a very heavy smoker. Several times prior to that I had attempted to quit using cigars and pipes but I just began inhaling them too. If I had gone too long without a cigarette, one may have found me sucking on a automobile's tail pipe out in the driveway. My first cigarette was at age 6 and I began smoking regularly at 12 or 13.

That's quite a head start on me. I didn't start till I was 15. I've tried several times to stop but have failed. The longest I've gone without a smoke is 6 weeks so far. That was in 2005.

I have an added incentive now which is very much to do with my daughter and the fact that I want to live to see my grandchildren. (A little presumptive, but one can hope.)

I am doing it more for her than for myself.

I didn't get a wink's sleep last night. Not sure if this is worry, lack of 4000+ chemicals, or both. :wah:

I would recommend the inhalator to anyone who can't resist hanging their lips on the end of a fag. Particularly on bad days.

Good job OM. This is day 9 for me. I actually had a dream last night that I smoked and it pissed me off for doing it. I then woke up wondering if I had smoked a cigg or not. I got out of bed, went to the bathroom and finally figured out that I couldn't have smoked, Hell I was in bed asleep.:wah:

Yeah it became funny and my wife woke up to ask me what I was laughing at. I told her about the dream and trying to figure out where the hell I had gotten the cigg to smoke. I was like " Okay where did I get the cigg, how did I light it, where did I put the ashes" then suddenly dawned on me that I was dreaming.

If it's any consolation. Lately, I've been coming downstairs (having woken up and got out of bed) and wondering what I was doing upstairs just a minute ago.

All good fun.

Day 10. The more I think about it the more I think it took me this long to quit because everyone said it was so hard. I am going to start telling people that it isnt as hard as everyone says. Put the damn things down and when you want one do something else until you quit thinking about it. Maybe more will try if they are not so scared of it being hard and failing. I also told my wife and cousin who are somewhat trying to quit that if you smoke you arent failing its the trying to quit which is the success. Keep at it. No pressure just support.

Thanks all for all the support.

Yes, thanks everyone for the support.

This is my 5th day now. I haved to say that I'm personally grateful for the inhalator. Without it, I would have been on the baccy a couple of days ago. It's not just the nicotine, for me it's the whole habit and ritual of rolling, ligghting, puffing, etc. The desire only lasts a second or so and comes complete with a visual in my mind. The inhalator helps that to pass relativley painlessly. :)

Seems like a lot of people roll their own over there. Here almost everyone buys them pre packaged. Is it cheaper to roll your own?

I am proud of all of you who gave up the cigs, as I have also done years ago.

You all have good attitudes...take one day at a time. AND, stay away from places that you like where your friends smoke. You'll be able to be around them later on, but perhaps not now. I didn't go to parties, pubs and restaurants for about 3 months after I gave up smoking.

I started hand-rolling when I was a young man. Cheaper and stronger than tailor mades. Tailor mades are about £6 to £7 a pack of 20 now, depending on the brand you buy.

Today marks my 6th day without a smoke so far. I'm still heavily dependent on the inhalator. But I reckon that even if I used an inhalator for the rest of my life, it would be miles healthier than smoking cigs.

My sense of smell is really strong now. I can smell next door's dinner cooking as I write this and I'm glad I'm not having what they're having.

I've cut down on the cartridge changes for the inhalator. I'm still getting a buzz from the withdrawal symptoms because of that.

:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl That cracks me up! I was very surprised by the things I no longer enjoyed once I could really smell them. And I know this sounds gross but I added a hanging deodorizer in the toilet bowl in addition for in between scrubs:yh_rotfl

Try the rubber band on the wrist yet? I actually found that helpful for the 'something else to be doing with my hands' trick. just sit there twacking yourself and it's not a bad distraction at all.:-6

I was sitting next to a smoker at work today and each time he went out for a coffin nail it reeked around the desk for half an hour after - I'll be glad when we're at different desks.

I think ex-smokers are more sensitive to smoke by other smokers than people who have never smoked. A lot of the latter folks that I know have told me it doesn't bother them in that way. Obviously, more people nowadays are concerned about secondary inhalation effects.

Yes, the odor of cigarettes permeates your body, clothes and house. I can smell smoke on the young children who come into school because their parents were smoking in the car or at home.

The real problem with cigarette smoke is that it contains tiny droplets of the gunk created by burning the tobacco.

I have been having a go at not smoking for a couple of weeks now - since I got this bug from my hubby ! It seemed the ideal time to give it a try - when you don't really feel like having a cigarette. I've usually managed to just have a couple during the day, but today is the first day that I haven't had a cigarette at all (yet) and I'm going to try to make it a clean day for the first time. What is helping me is that I feel absolutely lousey - still got the remnants of this bug, and I've only got one day left of the antibiotic course. Now I've got loads of mouth ulcers and they are agony (I counted 8 of the little buggers yesterday!). The thought of breathing in cigarette smoke when my mouth is so painful, just makes me wince. The only thing I can eat or drink at the moment is soft slithery stuff like pasta and lukewarm tea or coffee, oh and I had some soup yesterday. Nothing that involves tomatoes or anything like cispy toast! I can't open my mouth very wide, so that has restricted the teeth cleaning a little, and has prevented me from talking too much (a break for hubby LOL). So, with all this help, I would be stupid to pass up a chance to give up smoking wouldn't I ? No I refuse to take those patches or chew gum etc. No if I can't stop smoking now, when I really don't feel like smoking, it would be a very poor show, and a great opportunity missed. I really am fed up with skulking off somewhere just to satisfy the craving. It's like you've got leprosy and must be segregated from the other people who do not smoke. You gather in a huddle with all the other lepers, chuffin away, getting your fix. It is disgusting, but it is an addiction, like alcoholism is an addiction, but not nearly as anti-social. I do know that you have to still have will-power even after a year or so. I gave up smoking many years ago, for a couple of years, but found I was spending more money on chocolate than I ever did on cigarettes ! So I stupidly started smoking again - one of the biggest mistakes of my life. But at least I know I did it once so I can do it again ! This time it will be for good................... but I will go day by day, and I will keep my roll-up makings around so I'm not fretting about not having any tobacco anywhere. I would actually like my brown lungs to have a chance of returning to a sort of pinky colour, eventually. I would also like to enjoy not getting out of breath when I walk upstairs sometimes. I would like to be able to tell insurance companies that I DO NOT SMOKE,
I'm a Saga-lout, growing old disgracefully

Good for you, G. I do hope you make it without the patches, etc. I didn't do at all well with the minis. They were too powerfully minty for me. and I hope you don't have to suffer those ulcers for very long.

This is my 10th day now. I go back to the clinic to report on my progress tomorrow. The inhalator has definitely been very helpful.

I've had no work this week. Today I walked into town and back and definitely felt as though I had wind to spare. Yet, I can feel the nicotine in me from the inhalator. I can taste it now too. Not very pleasant. I'm only using one capsule a day now. The next step for me is not to replace it then just to remove it and use nothing. Then I might look for a straw.

I found that for me, it wasn't just the addiction to the substance, but also the rigmarole of rolling, lighting, holding, etc. was an addiction in its own right. So, the doctor and I decided to deal with one thing at a time.
