because then, out of politeness, we'd probably stay home and entertain them, when all the time we're itching to go out to the pictures or for a nice meal, etc.

but if you have no plans and no guests.......then you can quite happily sit with your feet up, drinking coffee, munching chocolates and watching american sitcoms!
