One of the reasons I joined the fg, was because it was a nice place to visit. I personnally think you should leave it the way it is. How would you monitor everyone fairly? If it is a he says she says, do you keep the most popular person? I just want to say, that I like at least 99% of the people on the fg. I know my oppion does not matter much. thank you fro listening. tater

1. Should ForumGarden be an "invite" only forum?

2. Should we institute a warning system that objectively kicks you off the forums after a certain amount of off-topic remarks?

3. Should we allow personal fights on the public forums?

4. Should we show a "no-tolerance" stand on personal attacks?

My tuppence worth.

i was lured here by tombstone who posted a link in another discussion forum I was looking at.

I stick around because I like the diversity of opinion and enough can disagree and argue with each other without it getting personal to make it fun and thought provoking.

1) invite only would destroy the diversity and many including myself would never stumble across it. Personally I don't spend any time in other forums and feel guilty at the time I occasionaly spend here.

2) Off-topic? Groups of people talking often break off and have conversations between one or two that are notyhing to do with the main group and then come back in. Freeflowing conversation rather than deliberately going off topic-asides to one another or in jokes, if you feel a thread post is irrelevent it must take all oftwo seconds to decide not to read it.

3) I can't understand the need for personal attacks anyway and usually just ignore them on the odd occasion someone directs one at me. Any I might have mnade weren't intended.

4) Depends what you mean by personal, I have been accused of making peronal attacks when I haven't, some people wpuld start a fight in an empty room if they could. The most ludicrous one was someone-who shall remain nemeless accused me of being anti American because I used a small a in american rather than a capital. Since I occasionally put i instead of I no doubt I hate myself at times.

Personal attacks usually come from those who cannot accept someone might not see things the same way they do but can't think of a suitable response. Or they read more in to content than is actually there.

Personally I don't care and I just ignore such people. In fact I am unaware of some of the arguements that have been going on because i don't bother looking at those threads. It's like someone making rude gestures from the safety of a car-they know they are safe and feel empowered somehow making up for feeling helpless somewghere else in their lives. Maybe it's theraputic for them.

There are also cultural differences as well. For instance if i say to Spot or bryn mawr (no offence , grovel, grovel, ) for example, they are talking a lot of bollocks being also british he appreciates i am expressing strong disagreement rather than making a personal attack. saying bollocks is not a rude word. By the same token if they makes a crack about hairy scotsman wearing dresses I don't automatically assume it is personal but rather the typical friendly badinage that the different nationalities on these sceptered isles often indulge in. To neither of us is it personal and nor is it usually taken that way (I hope) but to outsiders it might possibly seem that way.

some individuals seem to take any disagreement with them as being personal. Who cares.

The odd that one that comes in to look for a fight only stay if they get a response, if ignored they wander away again.

If someone thinks something said is personal then ask the eprson who wriote it if it actually was. If it is then you can decide if you care or not what that person thinks. As a multi talented mega-being and a member of the forum garden petty sniping should not be an issue.

I enjoy the forum that's why I am here. It's more fun that that which I am skiving from doing.

This is an older thread, I can't remember if I posted in it, I think I found FG on a google search, I was messing around looking for a forum to chat in as I had just got a new laptop and I probably wanted to justify the expense! That was 2005, and I am still knocking around, I have not been as busy here sometimes as other times, and if it hadn't been for snooze, I probably wouldn't have remained a really regular posted if not for her, so it makes me sad that she is not around any more. But in general I would say that being a poster here, has been a hugely fun and interesting experience, slightly addictive, but what the hell! Anyway, its all good (mostly)! :-6

Forumgarden;391847 wrote: Nice thread Koan.

ForumGarden is a place to talk about "life." With that understanding, I'm growing weary of the personal barbs being thrown about by a small number of people on both sides of the campfire.

So, who would agree with me that ForumGarden should be about the issues, the content, and the topic at hand? This EXCLUDES personal differences and name-calling. Frankly, I feel that people shouldn't be here once they begin name-calling and sniping.

Why?

1. Because this is a public forum and personally I never want to see personal fights - it belongs either in private email or on another "flame" forum.

2. They never give it a rest.

3. Other people get dragged into it.

4. Technically, it is "off-topic" and does not add to the thread at hand.

So some questions for all of you:

Thoughts?

I agree, it shouldn't be tolerated. I've seen other forums that denigrated to sides a & b because of things like this and it is not a nice place to be. Besides, if you're name calling, you've already lost the argument in my opinion.

Those who must argue with one another should have the courtesy to take it to a private message. Argue all you want there without disturbing the entire forum. JMHO

We're part of the fixtures and fittings Minks!

Time to find the pub I think, no ones been in there for weeks, we need AC with his cleaning guy.

Don't be fooled by postcounts either, that Pinky hasn't earned her place as part of the fittings yet, even if she does have three billion posts  ;) :wah:
