I'm with you there, MrsK.. What the heck happened???? Really weird weather here in Canberra this afternoon. It's been sleeting and we've had snow flurries - now it's pelting hail???? My whole back garden's white. What's it like, over your way?

Most of the posts in this thread would be disallowed if THAT were the critreia. There will always be someone who is offended by something. I am not saying their reaction should not be important to them or that they don't have a right to their feelings, I am saying that asking who else doesn't like word-game threads does not cross some bad line unless you want everyone to act medicated and so PC you've created a lolipop fake boring environment that people can't even bust chops in. That's disgusting! That's nuts! Even with one nut I know that is nuts! We aren't talking about nasty personal attacks or anything like that, let's be realistic here!
Of course people should be able to express their opinion, whatever that opinion is. And isn't that exactly what has happened on this thread...different people with differing opinions expressing how they feel?

So I wondered why I've been gone two hours and there are still no new threads but there's 152 replies to this?!
Why is everybody and I mean everybody so bloody oversensitive?
What happened to the Forum Garden I paid to join? The one with really cool topics and humorous, usually nice people?

I thought I was trying to be really nice and humorous too, Red!! Grin.. But I'm a bit worried now. I have been known to play wordgames with the best of them, and also, on occasion, to contribute to the politics thread (I used to work in this business, so tend to avoid it for recreation), and if everthing else is considered winy anal crap, it's difficult to know where to go, or what new threads to start. TLW remains one of my absolute favourites. It is witty, inconsequential, word play oriented, surreal, probably anal, probably crap but never winy and I don't think it's the work of satan. Grin.

You are nice and humorous, Pam.

I like a few word games, don't care for others. I just don't read the ones I'm not interested in. I get in trouble whenever I visit the politics thread!

:wah:
I just wondered why I came in and everybody was carping at each other.

As to your question - I really have no idea. Something obviously upset a few of our regulars, but I'm totally at a loss to see what triggered it. As I very much like the people who appear to have been upset, as well as the apparent upsetters.. it's hard to know where to go from here.
Bewildering - is a four syllable word ending in -ing, which describes this thread, in my opinion.

Paul, I checked out your link. Thank you. So what you're saying is, I have exceptional skill at sizing up people?

Did I get it right or what, you crazy whackadoodle!? Paul, you were very mean to me and said things that weren't true. We need to square that away before we become buds you know. Don't let the negative traits dominate the good.
Please review your posts in this thread then compare them to my crime of this thread title. It's not pretty, Paul!

Hi Hammy, Marie!!!
You know, my trade - in one incarnation or another - has always been words. I really LOVE word games, word plays, word puzzles, codes, fiddling about with language. Turning it, shaping it, messing with meaning, thinking about the meaning of meaning - and all that jazz.
Working in politics finally made me a-political. Working in words has made me very aware of the elusiveness of 'truth' - I try to say what I mean, simply.
In that sense, we all play word games in this Forum, on many levels. Read any thread!!! Some people express themselves more skilfully, more subtly, more succinctly or more easily than others, maybe - but on a conscious or subconscious level - we all do it. All the time.
I'm a cynic, and when I first came upon the proliferation of these threads, at the same time as we seemed to have a postcount war going on... thankfully that seems to have faded right out - I wondered if this was a factor. Nar. Lots of people just enjoy thinking up great words in a relaxed setting. And more power to them. All the threads in this forum are voluntary, after all.
Some of the actual word game threads do contain subtexts of humour and juxtaposition which might intrigue a psychiatrist. There may be a Psychology PhD in this for someone?
I likened such threads to a knitting circle yesterday. And I meant that in a good way. On reflection, they are probably more like a family game of Snap on a cold evening by the fire.
I have no idea what I mean by posting all this here now.

Yeah that's it!! What is my post count? Long time since I looked. Maybe post counts should be renamed Shame Counts. This is what you were doing when you should have been dealing with the contents of your in tray, mowing the lawn, making lunch, cleaning the toilet, pumping weights, calling your mother in law on the telephone, romancing the mailman......
Bibliometrics - Academics get money for their research mainly via competitive grants which are based on past output, mostly calculated by the number of publications in learned journals. But papers are not all equally worldchanging and learned journals are not all equally learned. So weighting systems have been devised to try and make these indicators fairer.
I think that was all a non sequitur.
It's nearly 8am here, and freezing. And I haven't had my coffee. Well, that's obvious from my crazy posts this morning.
Have a good day, Everyone!!

Well Hammy has 4967 - which means she is Queen, has a key to the executive washroom and first go at the virginity of any of the blokes in here she fancies, and any girls she can catch - if she swings that way.
I have 3295 posts - which means I am witchy and wild and talk too much. It means I am protected from the advances of Hammy - who couldn't catch me anyway - but may hafta mudwrassle LC.
