It does make you think !.................................

I'm still smoke-free, but it's easy for me at the moment because my mouth is sooooo painful with ulcers that I just couldn't bear to smoke any way! Hopefully, by the time the pain has been reduced, I will have broken the back of the worst part of withdrawl. Fingers crossed any way.

I can't abide the withdrawal symptoms. If I were in your shoes, Gill, I know I would be finding a way of getting the smoke into my lungs somehow.

Looking at those pictures, I'm glad that the lung in general heals itself. Though you apparently don't get back the lost aureoles.

This is day 11 for me now.

By the way, Kaz, thanks for the Vit.B12 suggestion. I've started taking one tablet a day. I did google about mouth ulcers and it was very informative. It confirmed what you said about lack of vitamin B 12. It would be nice to be free of the painful little buggers. Very interesting to read what the main causes of them are.

well i sort of started just wondering if i could go a whole day,,, then after a day well if you can go a whole day surely you can go two? and it goes from there ,,, but i think having gone through it you have to give it a good enough go to see if you can pack in and i would say after 3 months,, its not such a struggle..i have put this link up before ,, but it helped as it tells you what symptoms top expect and why, how long before they go away. Like i have said to others,, think of it as being ill ,, like you are now gill you just have to go through it until you fell better,, same with withdrawal,,, you will feel better eventually.

Today, I subjected myself to the next test - the pub.

Well, I actually had a good time and I didn't once feel the need for a smoke.

Thanks G#. I find that I'm also becoming less dependent on the inhalator. I'm not using it quite as much as I was at the start of this. Though it has definitely helped. Today is my 13th day without a smoke.

No, all the smokers either use a garden or choke the doorway when they want a smoke. Come rain, shine, or snow, they'll be out there. It is, in my opinion, a demeaning experience in those pubs that do not have a garden or outdoor sitting area. The doorways will be cluttered with dog ends.

Given that cigarettes is a form of slow suicide, plus the hullabaloo recently over the political use of cannabis contrarily to the scientists' reports, I do not understand why cigarettes aren't made illegal. Of course, the Government makes a lot of money out of tobacco. Worse is knowing that chemicals are purposefully put in tobacco to make it addictive. To me, this is a form of legal murder. At the very least, tobacco manufacturers should be ordered to omit these lethal substances.

Well done YOU !!!! These days are sent with ferocious regularity, so I understand, and apparently each of these sort of days that we overcome, makes us a bit stronger. You have done so much, OM, just keep on trucking, Kaz says it gets easier and better, and I am relying on you to lead on, so I've got something to keep up with !!!! I had a little mini pang earlier today, but at that precise moment, my ulcers started really hurting and I had to go for another mouth wash. I thought, there's no way I will let cigarette smoke pass over those horrible little ulcers. The pain is bad enoiugh without adding to it. So you see, OM, I'm probably better off than you are at the moment ! :yh_wink:yh_star

That's what the inhalator is for. As you say, Kaz, there's seems to be a bit of a renewal of the urges at the moment and if it's a strong one, I reach for the inhalator.

I am really pleased though as I have really struggled just to get off the ground until this last attempt. Finding the right crutch is very important.

I'm into my second week now - day 9 and still smoke-free ! I've had one or two 'itches' but nothing I can't handle (yet), I knew it would get interesting once the mouth ulcers started to recover and I wasn't in so much pain.. The ulcers are still there and still give me a reminder that they are still there, and I am still mouth washing the little buggers, but they are at last recovering. I shall just go from day to day and fight off the temptations as and when they occur. I am avoiding using patches or gum, and using any other 'help' as I know me, and I shall get fed up with those things and it may cause me to 'just have a quick drag' which I don't want to do. I have got my ciggy making things, but they have not been touched since last Tuesday 2nd November 2010. I know it will reduce any anxiety that would certainly occur if I didn't have them around. At least I won't be worrying about having to go to the shops to buy tobacco etc, if I became desperate, so at least that is one thing less to think about ! I will press on. Tomorrow is yet another day under my belt. :guitarist :-6

well if you have had to put up with the crappyness off mouth ulcers and a bug for the past couple of weeks so you can put up with the crappyness of withdrawal for another couple of weeks:lips::)

CRAPPYNESS very descriptive, the bug is still hangin around, making me cough, and I've had that bug since the middle of October. The ulcers for nearly two weeks. You're quite right, why should I worry about another couple of weeks of withdrawal ? Easy peasy !! ............................................... ahem .............. :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

I'm into my 12th smoke-free day, and I've been sneezing and my nose has been running, but I have only one mouth ulcer (on the tip of my tongue :-5 ), so I am relieved about that at least, however, the damn cough has returned grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I suppose it helps to stop me wanting a smoke ! :yh_wink and hopefully another day under the belt ! :guitarist :-6

I didn't sleep very well over night, because I kept waking myself up with the coughing. I'm glad I'm still sleeping in the chair in the sitting room, at least Chris is not being disturbed by my coughs :) Somebody suggested to smear Vick Vapour Rub on the underneath of each bare foot, then put warm socks on - it effectively stopped coughing!

I don't really want to stop the coughing, though, because I want to get all this rubbish out of my lungs, don't I ? Apparently this Vick process does actually work !

If anybody wants to try it out, if they have an irritating dry cough, maybe.

I tell you what, if I'd not stopped smoking I would have smoked about 4 ciggies over night ! ;):D

Today is now my 19th day. The last few days have been quite difficult at times and the yearning for a cigarette has been quite strong. The inhalator has saved my resolve each time.

One of the most remarkable things is to see my right hand without nicotine stains over the fingers and thumb.

Wow ! Everybody is doing soooooooo well. Keep it up all of you ! We're in this together, and we'll beat it ! For people who have never smoked in their lives, you may find it difficult to believe how almost impossible it is to give up such an addiction.

I can assure you that it is an addiction, and needs enormous will power to overcome it. This effort has to be maintained for even a few years, till the body is totally clear of the slightest trace of nicotine, but I am assured that as days go into weeks, then months, it does get easier. We'll be better off physically, financially and even mentally !! Go to it all of us !!! :guitarist :guitarist :guitarist :-6 :-6 :-6

I can back up what Gill says about the addiction. Apparently, according to the NHS, there are over 4000 other chemicals added to cigarettes and tobacco by the manufacturers to get and keep smokers addicted. Tobacco by itself is no addictive. Why cigarettes are legal, I don't know. Neither do I understand how the manufacturers get away with putting this lethal crap into cigarettes. The full list of ingredients is appalling.

That should be investigated and those companies heavily fined, if found guilty. I have heard that pet food manufacturers also adopt that process - including various addictive (to animals) ingredients so that animals show a definite preference for certain tinned pet foods. I am not allowed to mention any names otherwise I could have a law suit against me ! But it does pay to check the list of ingredients on the tin first. I suppose that is why I always gave our dog fresh chicken or turkey mixed with veg and gravy, or soup for him to eat. He lived to be 15 3/4 years old, not bad for a German Shepherd, so I must have done something right ! But I can quite believe that manufacturers could easily include addictive ingredients in their products, and I doubt they would be noticed by authorities - a very sneaky and sinister ploy.

Day 20. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks and half way to my first target.

I have noticed that the patches are starting to leave marks now and those areas tend to be slightly itchy. I do try not to use the same spot of skin and change the overall area of my torso where I place the patches every day. But the marks have been appearing now for the last 4 days.

I will have to raise this issue with the doctor when I see him next Thursday.

You're lucky. You can always find a twig to chew on and no one will point a finger at you.

Just kidding. :guitarist

Keeping it alive. This is Day 23 for me. Still struggling but I have not given in to the urge to smoke.

I sure hope so, Kaz. I feel like I've progressed 3 inches in near frozen treacle at the moment.

Thanks for the support. :)

What really amazes me is that I can go for a beer or two and it doesn't seem to bother me at all. I watch them all go out for a fag, I'm frequently offered one, and I have no problem with it. I've even stood outside and chatted to a mate while he smoked and I've not wanted one. Strange. I think it's mainly when I'm just with myself.

I'm wondering if anyone's managed to go a whole day with one...

If I were to guess I'd say this kid's done it... YouTube - Shocking! 2-year-old Indonesian Baby Ardi Rizal smokes 40 cigarettes a day *UPDATED* (Widescreen)

Either that kid's hands are smaller than I realize or those are 100's he's smoking!

Day 16 smoke-free, woooooohoooooooooo, and so it progresses. I admit I've had one or two temptations, but all I have to do is remember how I wheezed at night sometimes and how, on those occasions, I wished I did not smoke !!! :yh_wink
I'm a Saga-lout, growing old disgracefully
