Sorry, know i'm off topic but, yes, I saw this when it was first released in 1970(?), mainly I am ashamed to say because I had a crush on Peter Strauss at the time. I wasn't at all prepared for the scenes of graphic violence which were, then I think, very much ahead of their time.

I saw it again subsequently on VHS and it lost none of it's impact on a 2nd viewing. I 'm sure that it was not PC for the time of it's release and was probably heavily censored when first released but it depicts the horrors of war very graphically and really brings it's point home.

I must try and get it again on DVD to see if it still holds up after all this time.

I think it was released as a film with "purpose" I saw it at a colllege campus. It was ahead of its time. I was ashamed as an American and a human being after seeing it. If your still interested in this type of history I would recommend reading Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee. Author escapes me.
