I've just been reading all the posts here in Hopes Christmas thread. Makes me want to sing "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..........Jack Frost nipping at your nose". :wah: I enjoyed reading the friendly banter and seeing the Christmas themed pics..........and Hopes house too. :)

Seems likes most of all us are on a tight budget this season. Part of the joy of Christmas is being able to give gifts and see the person smile when they receive the gift. I say we help each other out with suggestions on "gift-giving on a tight budget". We have two categories.............gifts for children and gifts for adults. I've read some baking suggestions here, but we need recipes. Anyone have any craft ideas? Please share.............we can use all the help we can get.:)

Hate all the commercialism though that sadly now seems to come hand in hand with it.... our shop have become christmas grottos here since Halloween and it's rammed down your throat BUY! BUY! BUY! The spirit of Christmas has been replaced with want and greed sadly for many.... I feel very sorry for parents of young children having to shop with little ones at this time of year, with the pressure of children wanting everything pushed at them on the shelves.....

I'll put my tree up (artificial - My dogs would eat a real one! LOL) early december, it looks the same 'every' year! LOL

Here's my tree, took this pic dec 2007

Note the baldy tree at the bottom because my dogs steal the ornaments! :wah:

But from the beginning of Dec, I count down the days.....

Hopes Christmas thread is the best one here, we do have tons of fun, I really enjoy posting Christmas theme pics, after all, tis the season, and the love and warmth that has been shared here is like non other.:-4

one of my favorite receipes is Chocolate Coconut Drops: You can make these anytime, freeze them, bring out to room temperature for an hour and serve.

Some call them chocolate macaroons.

this makes 24:

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter

6 tlbs cocoa

1/2 cup of milk

2 tsps of vanilla extract

3 cups of instant oats

1 cup of grated coconut

Combine sugar and cocoa in a saucepane.

Add butter and milk, bring to a boil.

Add vanilla.

Remove from heat and blend in oats and coconut.

Drop by the spoonful onto wax paper.

Chill until firm.

if anybody had a garden or orchard and put up any jelly or preserves or pickles or anything like that they make a nice gift for someone, just dress the jars up a little.

i know of one girl who had asked that if anyone is gonna give her children gifts to please give them shoes and clothes, so she can take the money she would have had to use for that and buy food! :-1

i know some people buy some basic grocery needs and pack them into a box and give them as christmas presents, the people who received them were very happy!

This is one of the larger chain stores here, but also bare in mind, it can be junky stuff as well, but you can get good stuff for a buck, and it makes a great store for stocking stuffers as well.

As a budget gift Im going to be 'adopting' a rescued animal from wildlife aid. You pay to help support the treatment of an injured animal until its release back into the wild. The person to whom you give the gift gets a photo and a letter telling them how the animal got on and when the animal was released. prices start from 7.50 sterling

I'm gonna adopt a duck for my mum. When she was given duck for dinner she couldn't eat it and cried because she kept thinking of the ones she feeds on the way to work.. I think this will be a much more appreciated Christmas duck.

I did this for my in-laws one year, they have a paticular kind of soup they like to eat everyday for lunch, i got them some cans of that, she eats lots of apples and he eats lots of bananas so i got some of them, and some candy that she likes and he chews chewing gum constantly so i got him a bunch of that, and i made it all up into a gift basket, they were really pleased!

the thing about the gift basket idea is it's very personal because you put what the people like in it and also it can be as little or as big as you want according to how much money you want to put in it.

also too we took the youth of the church christmas caroling one year and wanted to bring the folks a gift, so we got some of the smaller poinsettias, the 5 or 6 dollar ones and one of the childrens mothers baked some pies,

you should have seen how happy these folks were with there flower and their pie!:D
