Oscar and Fuzzy are both very smart..and have a drive about them that i very much respect..and a crystal intelligence..
Spot is way to smart..very educated..seems to know everything..in detail..:wah: so some of his simple remarks crack me up sometimes.
of course i like you all..but these stand out in this thread and i am championing them..
if you step around the shallowness of hurt feelings and dont take things personally this thread is very educating..and entertaining.:-6

Unfortuantely, the British suffer from 'Irony' and 'Sarcasm'. What is an innocent remark to us, can offend another. It's all Margret Thatcher's fault.

On a site this size it's an even bet whether the total ear or testicle count is odd or even. People lose things. At a rough estimate we average two ears and one testicle each here.

Sometimes statistics give out of context information. So if you are going to give a testicle (lol) statistic for a web site....then a male/female statisitic would help. But roughly I would say that your ear/testicle statistic is pretty close to correct

This was apparently tongue in cheek. Thankyou Oscar for the clarification. I'm an Aussie, but I'm sure any oversensitive French people we used once to have a few of in here but now don't will be relieved.
But - just for illustration purposes - look at the words. This is not a criticism of some part of French foreign policy, or a dig at the President of the Republique. Not even a swipe at his good lady, the ex top model and fine singer, Carla Bruni. It's not a derogatory comment on the entente amicale between Britain and France or knocking of the recent photos of Mr Brown and M Sarkozy taking on a joint leadership role re the economic crisis..
It's dissing a whole country and all its 60 million people, in a way I don't recall any poster getting anywhere remotely close to in relation to America. Even in jest. If this were real it would be hostility.

Well there were a few over a couple days directed at Americans that were this bad, many were almost as bad. But its not happening anymore so thats what counts. Yesterday is gone.

JJ was permanently banned from Forumgarden. He came back with a proxy-disguised registration as Touchstone and built a persona. He claimed to be a US marine - bear in mind he's actually South African - and he started a deliberately inflamatory thread saying the US had won in Iraq. Fuzzy and Oscar reacted badly and shouted when Jester and Wildhorses came in backing JJ/Touchstone.
Who, out of all these people, are you blaming for any perception of anti-Americanism?
Then we had this thread of Accountable's, complaining about me still being a member here? Suddenly it all turns into being my fault? I don't quite know what I can do about that. Would someone like to tell me when the last time I showed impoliteness to a member was, for example?
Oscar and fuzzy, get in here and apologize for your over-the-top reaction of the last couple of days, that might start to calm the people who need calming. I know it's been fun for you but it's not helped.

I pm'd "someone" here that I thought there was something not kosher about Touchstone. His posts seemed "familiar" and his local time on his posting profile was on California time and not NY time (not that that matters...we can always change our local time). I thought Touchstone was a former member, but I didn't think it was JJ;)

as to the OP...
I'm a Canadian. We kill seals. Clobber 'em. I have to live with that because I live here and that's how some people see my country. I also live in an igloo and ride a moose to work.
If you live in America you have to live with the impression the American government creates among foreigners... and it isn't very pleasant right now. You live in a democracy, you as a group elect your leaders. They represent you. Hopefully the world's impression of America will change but it takes longer to undo bad press than it takes to create it.
What do you expect? That everyone ignore world events?
If someone dislikes America because of what they have done to other countries, is it their fault that they noticed or America's fault for allowing their leaders to create that impression? Stop killing messengers.
btw, I don't hate Americans. You can ask G-man. He'll vouch for me.

It is unfortunate that the worlds press has been dominated by the U.S. election, and the following collapse of economy in most country's. It is very difficult to avoid such news in this present climate.
I have enjoyed reading members opinions on here and i don't see any
true ill-feeling. Any spats seem to clear very quickly and that shows a great understanding and tolerence of the people on here.
When different country's are expressing their views, it is only human to become defensive should they feel their country is being mocked. Not everyone is a great writer and i doubt every member on here has a degree in the written word. It is there-fore inevitable that a member will express themselves in a way they feel is correct but may appear in an entirely different manner to a member of a different nationality. It should maybe be understood that some do not express themselves as well as others. That does not make them inferior or any less important to this forum than anyone else.
What a dull world it would be, should we all be equal and alike?

Koan makes some excellent points.
The problem is, most folk are patriotic to their country and will fight to the death to defend it, be it with a gun or a pen and quite rightly so.
This thread has made me very uncomfortable, being a non American, do I come under the group that is "Anti American" because I was born on this side of the water?
I see FG developing into a them and us forum, something I never thought I'd see.
May I remind everyone that the very patriotic Touchstone who fought for his America was in fact a moron living in South Africa.
My word, what problems one blip can make.

I see FG developing into a them and us forum, something I never thought I'd see.
May I remind everyone that the very patriotic Touchstone who fought for his America was in fact a moron living in South Africa.
My word, what problems one blip can make.

I go to many forums with people from all over the world. About 12 of them. This is the only forum where I have seen this anti american sentiment. Oh yes there will be the occassional "drive by" poster on some of those, but generally everyone is very friendly. People do not have to ignore world events, but they dont have to be abusive either. There is a fine line between expressing ones views and being abusive. Other forums seem to accomplish this and there is no reason that cant be true with this forum.

If it turns out that, for example, I post solidly throughout 2009 in favour of the policies and actions of the incoming administration, will that just confirm I'm anti-American in your opinion? I keep telling you I'm fervently against the policies and behaviour of the Bush White House and you've interpreted my posts as anti-American. What'll you think after January when I continue to harangue the Bush administration but start to laud the new President?

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

Seriously, I don't bother to get into any of the threads in question here -anymore. I decided when I came back a bit ago, that I'd stick to other sites for discussions on serious home issues and politics. The few I bothered with here during the presidential election just reinforced my desire to not engage here. I went elsewhere for real conversations that make me think rather then just make me want to react.
But don't take the fact that folks can't be bothered here anymore as a sign that anyone has won any argument, on any issue. Driving folks away doesn't win the point. The point is only won if you have managed to persuade that other person that your point was the correct one.
There just aren't all that many Americans that you are going to be able to convince that America is what is wrong with absolutely everything in the world today... much as you may like to.. Others of us just get sick of hearing it over and over again, eventually..

I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

I'm all for a democratic America but I've never seen one so far.

It really depends on how you say it Spot. As I said in an earlier post there is a fine line between expressing your views and abuse. Dont forget that each American has one vote and cannot control how others vote. In one of our discussions I remember you said to me that Bush foreign policies were the fault of all Americans because we voted for him. But I never voted for Bush and I cant control how others vote. I can only encourage them to vote how I think would be most beneficial to our country....but still I dont get to vote for them. So in discussions on US foreign policies please remember that the person you are speaking with only has one vote....just one. Collectively....yes we do control the government. But personally, sometimes things go the way I want, and sometimes they dont. I still only have one vote, as does each and every American. So why would you blame me for Bush policies when I never voted for him?.....unless I state that I agree with a particular policy.

Because so far you've personally failed to rise up and overthrow your tyrannical government or at least taken to the streets with placards protesting what's happened. I agree it takes rather more than just one of you to achieve change but that's been the litmus test for a good American over the last eight years. Who knows, maybe after January 20th I'll feel differently about it.
