More fabrication and attempts at guilt by association. I never made such an admission citing "dixy," whatever that is. Tread on someone else.

Having grown up in Virginia, it's possible I have forgotten more than some folks know about the Civil War. That's irrelevant to this thread. So is my race, though your assumption is quite brazen. Mr. King was fighting for civil rights in the 1950's and 1960's. That is what is referred to in America as "the civil rights movement." I have never mentioned the Civil War until you raised it as a specter. Fan the flames of discord to your hearts content.

I never brought up slavery, the Civil War, place of residence or "dixy" until you raised them as divisive specters. If you need to read between the lines and add things that are not there for your own agenda, I can't take ownership of that. That's on you, mate.

How could ANYONE discuss MLK without a good and thorough discussion about the motivations behind the civil rights movement?

The record reflects I started a thread to merely discuss the pointed issue of Mr. King's plagiarism. That would not, in and of itself, require lengthy and doctorate level discussion of the entire civil rights movement. I'm not the one that took the discussion off course.

ChiptBeef wrote: President's Day. We do not celebrate them on seperate days. I was referring to national holidays were we celebrate one individual on one specific day, selectively. Do we celebrate our individual veterans? No, not even those that earned our highest honor, The Medal of Honor. We have Veterans Day. Why can't we just have a Civil Rights Day to celebrate all civil rights leaders, with Mr. King at the top of the list?
There are plans underway to erect a monument to Mr. King in our nation's capital, something all the other civil rights leaders won't have. Isn't that proper recognition? It's good enough for former presidents and veterans of the the Vietnam and Korean Wars. It seems that celebrating Mr. King has become a pseudo-religion. The celebration has become sacred. If you dare question it, you are evil. I've been contacted by one or more forum members that are refraining from posting in this thread for fear of getting one of those warm and fuzzy tags, like "nazis," racist" or "bigot." That's a sad commentary on debate in our country. We will never resolve the race issues if we can't freely discuss them without adhominem attacks.
Lincoln & Washington were honored on their birthday's originally, until circa 1971, when "President's" day was supposed to (It has been said he did not) have been proclaimed by the then President Nixon. Since both Lincoln's & Washington's birthday's were in February they were combined to the middle of their birthdays on a Monday or Friday. (We all lost a holiday)

No we still celebrated both in the beginning, the only reason I didn't after that was because my jobs did not recognize them as holidays.........then King day came along....There was a big mess with Arizona too, I don't remember why they changed (they refused a King day) I think they got some kind of sports team or something and that they observing King day was part of the contingency.

ChiptBeef, if you endorsement was simply from supreme carelessness, I trust you will be more careful of your resources in the future.
Stormfront.org is the website of a notorious hate group. I learned about it through the work of the Canadian Jewish Congress, who monitor such things so that they may be exposed for what they are.
At best, ChiptBeef has stepped into a vile pile of excrement. That is, if one were to believe his arguments of defense.

When I wrote national holidays, I was referring to federal holidays observed by our government. Good Friday and Easter do not fall into that category. Sorry if it was too vague.

I think we should try to live Mr. King's dream everyday. Why not remind ourselves of his legacy and human qualities (good and bad) everyday?

Why not? Because I don't get a day off every day thats why.I don't even get super bowl Sunday off,Now that is a reason too celebrate,Next too x-mas and easter it is the most family orientated holiday of the year.Even non sports fans gather too enjoy the feeling.THIS is what greatness is about.

I was thinking more in terms of in our everydy lives, whether it's a workday or not. Maybe just as simple as inviting one of your friends from work, or a neighbor of another religion, race or creed to your place for the Superbowl. That would be a start.

What? Jives is confining the celebartion of civil rights to one day? Shouldn't we strive to live the "dream" of Mr. King every day? Some could argue that such a sentiment might be viewed as racially motivated.
In example: "They get one month every year to celebrate (African-American month) and their leader gets a national holiday. That should be enough. Let's move on."
Enough said.

What a ridiculous sentence I just wrote.

An original, fabricated sentence in quotations to block out the Jives factor. Man. I'm getting dizzy. See, Snooze... now we have something in common.
P.S. I don't think that is part of the "dream." But, anything is possible.
