Having grown up in Virginia, it's possible I have forgotten more than some folks know about the Civil War. That's irrelevant to this thread. So is my race, though your assumption is quite brazen. Mr. King was fighting for civil rights in the 1950's and 1960's. That is what is referred to in America as "the civil rights movement." I have never mentioned the Civil War until you raised it as a specter. Fan the flames of discord to your hearts content.

LOL!! I know what it's called in America. I AM an American myself. And the flames of discord were sown by you, mate. The whole point is you CANT seperate the civil rights movement fron the civil war! One was born of the other! Sheesh! You really are thick.

No, just trying to stick to the thread topic. Your the one that raised the divisive specter of the Civil War, not me. I just posted opinons, facts and information about Mr. King in the context of the present day, not the 1860's. That was your thing.

okay......one more time for the simple minded.

What MLK DID in the 1960's, had it's roots in the 1860's. And it was a long time coming too! What Lincoln started, is still being accomplished today. It's not over even yet. Until a black person can go to any neighborhood in America and buy a house without fear of someone who says "there goes the neighborhood, ethel" Then the job is not finished! Until we stop teaching the kids that america wouldnt have been, had it not been for slavery, then MLK's job is not done! Any nation who has need of institutions like the naacp, has problems it needs to address. Do you by any chance live in a black neighborhood? I'm going to tell you right now, I lived in norfolk virginia for 13 years, man. They are GHETTOS!! Why? Because of invisible fences. I worked in N. Carolina. I was treating folks who were GRANDCHILDREN of slaves. It's recent memory for them. Because people who were BORN slaves were still ALIVE in the 1960's. You really dont get it, do you?

Take it to the history forum where it belongs. We can debate the history there. Is there a geneology forum? We could discuss ancestory links to slavery there.

I dont think so mate. You dont understand why people get offended at you in your obvious attempt to slam a perfectly reasonable person, doing noble works.

I just explained it to you. How off topic is that?

Lets put the question out there!

I am not trying to "slam" anyone. I'm merely trying to present facts and opinion like any other member. Why the hostility, mate? I stated in mumerous posts that I supported continuing the celebration of Mr. King's contribution to our collective heritage. But I forgot, that's a "slam," right?

In previous posts, you seemed obsessed with the issue of slavery. You inferred certain guilt to me because of where I live. Since you consider those issues on topic, let me share:

"Spain vs. England: The Early History of the Slave Trade"

"In 1562 Sir John Hawkins became the first Englishman to carry a cargo of negro slaves to the new world. In 1672 Charles II chartered the Royal African Company, which quickly established mother England as the world's greatest slave trader. The Middle Passage became an essential part of European commerce."

http://beatl.barnard.columbia.edu/stude ... nar51.html

"Essex, UK"... that's in or part of England, right mate?

Not a "messenger." Just a member posting like everyone else. But why let the facts get in your way. Speaking of fcats, "a front" for what? Or is that just more hyperbole and sepculation?

P.S. How's that "ignore list" treating you?

Maybe you missed the bit where I told you I was A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N! Iwas born in TEXAS. Grew up in INDIANA. And worked and lived in VIRGINIA and N. CAROLINA. I've only been in England for 2 1/2 years. And as far as slavery is concerned, England had already banned slavery, except in it's colonies, which after the REVOLUTION, was sown the seeds of discontent for the south. Slavery is as alive of issue as it was then. Like I said, I am just explaining why you offend the masses.

Ok,

I wasn't going to get involved but I think (hope) my input will be welcome.

Accountable, you appear to have a problem with chiptbeef and his threads/posts even to the extent that you opened a thread about one of his comments.

http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/showt ... hp?t=11837

it was about us not being indigenous, now, I admit I didn't read his original thread, but replied to your thread (the thread above).

Now to be honest I don't think on the face of what you said on your thread his comment/theory merited the reaction of a thread, started in what looks like the hope of getting a 'angry mob' together.

instead of reading everything he says, just ignore it, this forum is fairly huge, if you see a thread by him don't get drawn into it, as, from what I see, a simple thread about us being indigenous to this planet upsets you so much.

now I am not taking sides,

I am just saying that if you think he posts such piffle, why start another thread about it?

sorry if i have trod on any toes......I didn't mean to i was just making a observation.

So, you want it both ways. You infer that I'm guilty by association via my place of residence, but your as clean as the driven snow, even though you live in what's been descirbed as "the world's greatest slave trader."(link already provided). While I was born and raised in Virginia, I have lived in seven of the American states and overseas, as well.

You argued that the civil rights movement of the current day is tied to the American Civil War by geneology, yet you forgive England their ties to slavery. Do the geneological ties of slavery abrublty end at the shores of America? I think not. That's the kind of revisionist history we need to dispell. Slavery didn't just appear on American soil in the 1850's and 1860's. It's been around much longer than that, with a host of guilty parties involved, not just Americans that happen to live in the southern states, most especially those in the current year 2006.

In closing, I was wondering who elected you as spokesperson for "the masses?" How do you go about collecting the proper data to fill that job? Could you share an Internet link for us to review that data?

Thank you for the observation and voice of reason. I made similar suggestions to the offending party in question, to no avail. That was long before the attempts by that offending party to foment a forum-wide "ignore list" ban against me. Oddly enough, that same offending party has not been able to keep to their own claim of "ignoring" me. I believe that lends much credence to your theroy of "getting a 'angry mob' together." I led the horse to water, but the horse just kept eating the dirt.

Raven---I don't think that ChiptBeef's posts are OBVIOUS attempts to slam MLK, unless you take his posting of links re: MLK to be slamming. And while there is a connection between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement we could just as well tie in the "Revolutionary War" for good measure and really get off topic.

Raven wrote: You obviously posted something... that upset a few folks. .

I'll say! Chip, you started your tenure at this forum with a republican-slanted ultra-conservative thread blitz. Two threads at once, all heavily biased against Democrats in general and liberalism specifically.

Virginia Liberals Resort To Plagiarism.

Democrats Know Jack Too.

That doesn't bother me, I've debated with Scrat (a NeoCommunist) and TW2005 (a borderline Fascist and Socialist) and had loads of fun.

What really turned me against you was after posting these threads, with their obvious political slant, you came forward and ranted that you "had no particular affiliation." and you were trying "to be unbiased."

Yet here is a quote from you:"... proves the Democrats have had exposure to, and dealings with Jack Abramoff, yet the liberal media is trying to make it appear to be exclusively a Republican scandal."

You lost me right there. If you had stood up and admitted you are ultra-conservative, I might have given you some respect, but to just bow out and deny that you have a political agenda was, to me, just a bit cowardly.

That's specifically what upset me.

Now, how about taking these nice people's advice and hanging around some fun, fluffy, light threads for a while?:D
