Ha-never call San Francisco 'Frisco, unless you're from So. Cal.

Accents never leave you, my students still laugh at certain words I say. I just never got that Maryland sweet drawl.......................

Oh, well we must have been very naughty..................it is one of those things.

*innocent look*

Diego is OK, but no one says it.

L.A.-you go for the abbreviation.

But 'Frisco, nah.

Back East I haven't encountered anything like that.

Washington, D.C. is D.C.

Baltimore, is Baltimore.

Pennsylvania-they say Penn.

New Jersey, Jersey.

Chonsi I think that's "Joisey"!!

:yh_giggle

My sister lives in a town called "Kooskie" according to the locals,

yet it's spelled "Kooskia". I don't know if somebody said it wrong

once and ever after the rest just copied it or what.

Then there's always my fave to get people to try and say:

OAXACA.

Prounounced: wha-HAWK-uh.

:D

Took me years to figure out what they meant by inner and outer loops...............

Oaxaca-I loved when I had students from there, they had the neatest Mayan names, or names in Nuahtl-I've only had one back here and was the only teacher who could pronounce it, the student was amazed.

Always nice to have a dictionary of their primary language-makes it kind of fun when you get new students! Unfair advantage for me is, if I have Spanish speaking students I can tell them something in Spanish, and make the other students wonder all day long how I told them to get back on task with their schoolwork!

Get a picture dictionary, one without words. Then you can use it for all languages. Jot down the words for the items they need in school, and you will pick up a zillion other useful words along the way.
