Somebody may have said this before, but the first time I saw one I wondered why anyone would have a drinking fountain next to their toilet!
On another note: When I worked in the bank, I took a break to go to the bathroom. While sitting there, I heard splashing coming from the next stall. I leaned down to look under the barrier and saw a pair of empty shoes in front of the toilet bowl, but no leg anywhere, and still the sound of splashing. I stayed in the stall until the shoes next door were occupied and the person left the bathroom.
When I went out, I said to myself, I've got to see who is wearing those shoes! I though it might have been a bank client. I checked everyone behind the teller line, and lo-and-behold, it was one of my co-workers! I never had the courage to ask her what in the he*l she was doing splashing in the toilet bowl on her break! But, I never sat next to her at lunchtime again. Imagine cleaning yourself with toilet water? Especially from a public toilet??

Okay, I"m going to admit it- I didn't know it was for cleanup after doing The Deed.
Not to be a jerk or anything but...so it's true about French hygiene? I wouldn't know. I thought it was just a stereotype or slam of the French. I've heard that about some other European peoples as well. Is it laziness or what??

You generally tell people (the ones that ask!) they're for washing your feet in.

Not true - stereotype, generally (they do eat stuff that affects the breath,
though, cf. Greeks!)

It's not actually necessary to wash as much as most people do.

There must be a psychological reason why people - who would hate to think they were racist - feel able to single out the French whole race for the sort of comments they would be the first to object to if say, someone said all English people are snooty or all Australians are uncouth. And these are mostly otherwise intelligent and nice people. I find it really puzzling..
I know, I know. I've said this before. But someone has to.

I hope no one thought I was insulting the French. I was serious when I said I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I have heard for quite some time about the supposed lack of proper hygiene in France and having only met one tour bus full of French tourists (who did smell pretty dang funky!) when that subject came up, I was just wondering how accurate that notion was. Sorry if I offended!

But being french just means you were unfortunate enough to have been born
there, it doesn't make you a member of any *race*.

Well, Bill, I'm not against insulting someone who needs it, but having never been to France (or anywhere out of the US except Mexico) I had no idea how true that might have been. I can't believe that all French people are unclean but I do understand a generality about it.
Deja Vu: I think I've been in this thread before. :-2 We were talking about the difference between a generality and a stereotype.
Jimbo, you're funny. i could just picture you sending nastygrams on your cell phone! :wah:

I do wonder what you would need one for, if it's for hygeine then I'll have to say I much prefer my morning shower! :-6

I hope I didn't start anything with this remark: "(I've always found it odd that the French, who invented the bidet, are so reluctant to use underarm deodorant.)"
++++++++++++ This was based on my own experiences in France, and you'll just have to trust me. I've noticed more body odor there than in many other countries. This includes underarm odor and cigarette smell. Perhaps in summer it's better, but in winter, it was really BAD!

Chat rooms are odd places, Lulu. One can post around forums for ages in some kind of fluffy cloud.. We all reinvent ourselves one way or another. But occasionally reality appears - and it's always an eye opener. Sometimes an unexpected inspiration. Sometimes just plain ugly.

Yes, I heard some rumors about that..
You are right, better I get over..
Anyway, here in Italy every bathroom has got a bidet... unsless - as you say - an upscale hotel.
Interesting topic.
Would like to brig to your attention the bad manners someone has: not to wash their hands when out from the bathroom..:yh_shame

YES!

I can't stand that!! That's when I become rude and say "Geez...wash your hands!" Or if they just rinse with water and no soap. That disgusts me. I mean, how lazy do you have to be?!

I always wash my hands as soon as I get in the house and then I don't worry too much about all the stuff I've touched while I was out.
shopping cart handles freak me out the most, I can't believe how many people will wipe their nose on their hands or hack out a lung into their palm and then put their hand back on the handle! :yh_sick :yh_sick

I had a boss that told me when he was a kid he went over to his friends house and used the bathroom there. After trying to flush what he deposited several times to no avail he picked up his friends mothers comb and sawed it into smaller pieces so it would flush. :wah: Afterwards he washed the comb off and put it back. He said he was too embarrassed to tell someone about his large poo.
