The PILOT does, I'm sure! And yes....I want you all to see the volcanos as we fly in...it's a great introduction to Guatemala. There are volcanos all over the place! And lakes. And ruins, of course.

Where'd BTS go? I'm interested in this comment too.

I'm a Native American buff, and I know that None of them did this. I'd have to read proof of it. Which band was BTS thinking of? Hello?? Calling BTS.....

Go to Guatemala....they'll tell you and show you all about it. For example, by 600 A.D, archaeologists estimate that Maya population had reached a density of 600 people per square mile across a 36,000-square-mile area in northern Guatemala and nearby parts of Mexico & Belize! That equates to the most heavily populated parts of rural China today!
Because the traditional slash/burn agriculture they practiced couldn't support a population that large, the Maya began terracing and cutting into forests, which resulted in erosion and the need for further cutting, since rain forest is very poor soil.
The constant state of warfare under which they lived taxed their society, too, as many young men were lost as prisoners or killed in battle.
It wasn't a peaceful society and it doomed itself by losing respect for available resources.

Ok, I saw the movie. :-2
I thought it wouldn't be so bad. I figured, I know its violent so I will just shut my eyes through the gruesome parts BUT... that turned out to be 90% of the movie
I feel like I missed so much just because I was afraid to open my eyes. Maybe I'm more sensitive than most but I just couldn't handle all the violence. It involved children screaming - that was enough for me. Even some aggression towards a child - which I really couldn't stomach. I understand that Mel Gibson was trying to be authentic in his portrayal of the time period but for me to really understand a movie I need to see it all the way through.
Don't get me wrong. IMHO the movie was excellent (from what I saw). I missed a few non-violent parts because I kept the eyes covered too long. One thing I found at least beneficial in the movie is that the violent scenes are very predictable so you aren't caught seeing something you'd like to avoid.
The movie has an excellent story to tell about our society. It is done in subtle ways but when its done, it is done well (if individuals choose to pay attention). Extremely sad in parts (again, those children).
The actors were really good for being unknown! They made the film very believable. I think that is what makes it difficult to watch - because with most violent films you can remind yourself that it is just a movie but with this film you know it is a movie but it also actually happened. Mel took historical facts into account and then made a ficticious story within that (just like the Titanic was done).

I watched this last night and thought it was great. It is very graphic but in a believable way. I will definitely watch it again.
