Just look at the magazine shelves in the newsagent. How can you get anything so upside-down? The whole point of Middle Eastern practice is to get out from under being a mere sex object to the men. Try wearing a hijab for a few days and find out!

Spot you sicken me with your so called knowledge its very obvious you have no respect for women. I am educated enough not to fall into your web. If you didnt understand what I was talking about tough....... I havent got the time or energy to debate with a closed minded person who dosent know what he is talking about.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali recently wrote the book Infidel about her own journey from Somalia via Saudi Arabia to the Dutch Parliament and now to America (where she believes she is safer from the death threats she has since received). The book is one woman's first hand view of some of the issues raised in this thread. I make no comment other than to mention the existence of this book - which I have read. Check it out if you wish, and make up your own minds.

You know Pam, it has nothing whatever to do with this thread. Not one twitch.

I rather approve of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I think what she discusses is well worth Middle Eastern countries taking up and making use of. The Society of Defending Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia might well enjoy reading what she says too. I'm sure both she and they are, as I am, critical of the reactionary judge who failed to move with the times.

What I've criticized in this thread are the exaggerations and the stretching of three cases a year into an epidemic. I've criticized the notion that these countries are unchanging and have no pressure groups from within. My own opinion is that they're changing remarkably fast, that this very change is one small reason for the defensive fundamentalist reaction (small in comparison to the reaction to Western military intervention in the Middle East, and small in comparison to the very obvious injustices suffered by the Palestinians).

In many of the Eastern countries where women ‘have no rights’, they are strict Muslim countries being ruled not by constitutions and charters of rights, but from religious leaders and interpretations from the Koran under Sharia law.

Unfortunately these women also accept their circumstances due to their religious beliefs, however there also great woman fighting for rights, look at the changes in Afghanistan that are happening.

The ‘Middle East’ however is made up of many countries; in Egypt for example is a wonderful example of the combination of cultures where West meets East. So it is not right to group them all under on view or opinion.

Spot does have a point and should be listened to without total defensiveness, how liberated are the woman in the West? Look at what influences out kids these days?

Mass amounts of porn is available one click away on google, music videos always seem to have dozens of half naked woman hanging all over ugly rappers, look even at basic TV these days during prime time, do you know that on a Saturday morning show for kids the lead singer from Kiss was being interviewed by a teenager who asked him if it was true that he had slept with over 400 woman. My kids were watching this. Woman suffer from more eating disorders, I pay 12.50 for a haircut, my wife pays 70.00, the list can go on and on and on.

I have three daughters and I try to teach them over and over again, don’t fall for that cr@p, life is not the cover of a Vogue magazine.

I am a firm believer in equal rights, but I am sorry, the West is not exactly the role model we think we are.
