Political correctness seems to be a screen some bureaucrats/politicians and unintelligent people hide behind because they are either afraid of confronting issues, are incapable of thinking for themselves or just aren't very good at the nuances of language.

There is every difference in the world between saying All Sailors are Drunk and singing a fun song about one drunken sailor early in the morning.

Political correctness - for its own sake - is basically ridiculous.

The mere fact that anyone can get to the position of a politician seems to suggest they are not unintelligent. If they are afraid of confronting issue's, they would not have a career as a politician by which the very job depends on confronting issue's on behalf of their constituants.

Maybe the PC brigade saw this song in a different light? It could well be that the PC brigade saw it more as young children being taught that some-one who is drunk, is amusing? If that is the case, then i see their point.

This is the full BBC report of why it was changed. as you will see, it was not only 'Drunken Sailor' that was changed but other lines as well.

You will also see that it is nothing to do with PC.

"Drunken sailors" have been removed from the lyrics of a nursery rhyme in a government-funded books project.

But the Bookstart charity says the re-writing of What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor? has "absolutely nothing to do with political correctness".

The charity says that the shift from drunken sailor to "grumpy pirate" was to make the rhyme fit a pirate theme, rather than censorship.

"Put him in the brig until he's sober," has also been lost in the new version.

This latest ideological spat over nursery rhymes was sparked by the re-writing of What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor.

Bookstart, a project that encourages parents to read with their young children, has produced a different version - with no references to alcohol-swigging sailors.

Instead the hard-drinking sea shanty has been turned into something gentler, with lyrics such as "Tickle him till he starts to giggle, Early in the morning."

The charity has dismissed accusations that this is a politically-correct attempt to avoid the alcohol references, saying that it was a case of re-cycling a familiar tune for reading events that were based on a pirate theme.

"We wanted to find a rhyme which would fit in with this subject and this one has a tune which is instantly recognisable by all," said a statement from Bookstart.

"The inclusion of action lyrics like 'wiggle' and 'tickle' offer parents and small children an opportunity to interact, have fun and enjoy acting out the rhyme together."

Although the Drunken Sailor version familiar to children already leaves out some of the saltier verses.

The original includes such suggestions as: "Shave his belly with a rusty razor", "Stick him in a bag and beat him senseless" and "Put him in the hold with the captain's daughter."

The captain's daughter was a euphemism for a lashing from a cat o' nine tails.

We discussed this in work today, people of all ages, youngest 23 and oldest 56 years and from managers, nurses to admin and not one person agreed it was a good idea.

My mate Jean was correct when she said, the kiddies have to learn to sing baa baa rainbow sheep and what shall we do with a grumpy sailor and so forth in these new wrapped up in cotton wool values and then they leave the school gates and are back in the real world where everything isn't sugar coated and avoided.

I am purposely going to go out of my way to make sure my kids know the words of all the songs I loved to sing so innocently as a child...I feel my kids are missing out over all this PC crap... Cant roll in snow, cant play out in rain/snow/sun...Cant play british bulldog or tag..cant run cant go on the field.........School is turning into a prison.

I agree Chez,, this is rife not just among pc enthusiasts or shools etc but also it seems among some parents who seem to think everything should be extremely fair at all times... which is just unrealistic. When i was runing youth footy i had one parent say the grass was too long where we were training and he was going to hold us responsible if his son hurt himslf,, i told him he could take his son out of that training session if he was worried for his safety,, but oh no he just wanted to moan on and on,, then sid no cos if he didt train he probably wouldnt get a strat in the games at the weekend,,, so in the end i cancelled the training session and sent them all home honestly do they not let their children play on grass if they think its a bit long??? what about playing on the pavements or in the schoolyard that are concrete?? Its mad ,, and i have even had team manangers quoting child protection at me cos it has started to rain and they want games called off,, :yh_rotfl i could go on

most times i hear the words thats not fair,,, my teeth go one edge:yh_rotfl fair shmair.. lifes not fair get used to it:rolleyes:
