I had lived out here in the middle of Essex for about a year and I really wanted a certain net curtain.....I went everywhere fgs.....all major Essex Towns and none had the curtain that I was after.Then I rememberd a curtain shop down the Roman Road in the East End.....so I took a trip down there......and damn they had moved!!!! you could be onto something there amber lol.aperantly names in the past were related to wot sort of work u did.ie.smith comes from smithy someone who worked with iron,although all names dont match up with work related things,but i think we all come from the same footprint.:-6:-6

Actually you are very right Ally. Smith was a smithy or iron worker (horse shoes, plows etc), Baker was exactly that a baker, Stewart was a stewart (servant of some kind), Cook was a kitchen cook, Johnston is Nordic and means son of John,

How many more names can anyone think of?

Then there were the tribes or clans that broke down their names to identify what clan or tribe they were from and also wore colors. But we can do these after we have most of the above names first.

There is also the fact that many immigrants altered the spelling of their name when they arrived at their destination.

I remember many many years ago being at a bus stop in London in Docklands.There was a gentleman also there and I couldnt stop looking at him and he was quite an elderly gentleman but something was telling me something and I had to know the answer.........I got up the courage to ask him and said what I was thinking........I had a friend Vicky who is no longer with us now and she had a gentleman friend she had just been to Russia with.She had never shown me his picture but had spoke alot about this Bill......I simple said to the gentleman.....excuse me but do you know someone called Vicky??Yes it was Bill.....he had no idea how I knew it was him and tbh honest neither had I.The Bus Stop was about 12 Miles from where my friend lived also.....weird.
