An attempt to amuse combined with an anathema toward smilies. Nobody sees humour any longer unless it's telegraphed visually.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

We elect our governments to do a lot of things, running the economy, keeping us safe in our beds, making sure we get value for our pound of flesh they take in taxes etc, etc. I dont see a lot of competance there with this government. Since when have governments done things purely for the benefit of the electorate. Certainly not this one. Much of what our politicians do is motivated by self interest and most of its business is carried out with a fair degree of incompetence.
I'm not sure there is much faith in, at least, this government we have now
I do agree with you on that. Though the incompetence we mostly have to worry about for any national database is with administration errors. But the politicians are power hungry. Just by watching the Parliament channel, I am reminded of public school behaviour. The 'head' often has to call order.
But, at the end of the day, they are elected by us and so we legitimise them and their behaviour. If they weren't elected, they would probably find another way I suppose as they are hungry to be heard and to have other people act upon what they say.
I generally don't like politicians because of what they are and I would rather find some other way of administering the country's needs. Sometimes, though, I think people vote for them because they like to blame someone else for the crap. Either way, they are there and they are under a great deal of scrutiny from their own kind and this tends to balance things up for the masses.
