Surely you mean after.

I propose we amend the motion so as to exclude everything written after 1936.

It is moved and seconded that we exclude all literature written before, on, or after 1936 from FG Trivia

Is there any discussion?

What about questions about the Seoul Tube system ?

Such as "What colour is line 2 on the Seoul Subway map?"

I wonder who would know their own Capital cities tube line colour chart ?

ya can't know everything, and it would be pointless to have a trivia game where everybody did.

The District Line is not dark enough - makes the whole map look wrong :p

And the Metropolitan Line should be brown but that doesn't stand out so much :-)

I had a flukey one today............it wont last.

I am loosing it with this quiz.

Here's a trivial question you might be able to answer.

Why is the paper clip symbol covering the link to the page on some threads, I know it is because the thread has images,(why the need for the paper clip thingy ?) and why overlay the last page link ?

I clicked here, got a pop up box with image icons in, and an option to View the Thread.

FG Trivia

Overlaying the page links is just bad layout. If I have a butterfly I click that and get to the first unread post. If I don't, I click the frog to get to the last post or the thread title to get to the first. I've not found a practical need for the page links at all.

The 'page links' being the intermediate ones between first and last do you mean ?

I must take more notice, butterflies and frogs ?

This is the month-end call to anyone who'd like to play for the October FG Trivia contest which starts tomorrow. September has been resoundingly won by Bryn despite his holidaying in foreign parts for most of the month, G&T in one hand and online smartphone in the other.

Perhaps I might point out to Bryn that starting the month with two tens despite being on a parlous signal from an isolated island in the Mediterranean is just not cricket.

I had no idea - we must have passed close by his Cretan base on our way out to Sitia. If I thought he might be here rather than on Evia I'd tae a detour on the way back to the airport.

Has anyone the slightest idea of how the FG Trivia quiz score is calculated. It seems to be similar in complexity to the Duckworth Lewis system of scoring a one day cricket match (when rain delayed)

Duckworth–Lewis method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As with most non-trivial statistical derivations, the D/L method can produce results that are somewhat counter intuitive

Sounds very familiar

The score is simple - correct answers * 100 - seconds taken.

The points awarded are not calculated, they're table driven and I, personally, don't think they're well chosen for small groups.

I did write a spreadsheet at one point to replicate the leaderboard using the score rather than the points. Worked well enough and, in my opinion, gave a more balanced result but the quiz site is as it is.

Chonsi and I both got 7 correct answers and while I took much longer, we both got the same points. I think 2 points is derisory for 7/10. I took an average of 12 seconds per question (Chonsi even faster at an average of 7 seconds an answer). My average is more than most because my propensity to throw my arms in the air at some of the ludicrous questions and huff and puff alot

Then I press "submit" and throw my hands in the air and huff and puff at the scores.

I can understand that there must be a time penalty to prohibit cheating. I'm thinking of devising some software to slow time down during a quiz so I can do just that

I have given up being amazed at the Trivia quiz.

Or should I say I have given up on the Trivia quiz ?

I took longer to read the questions than it took some people to finish the quiz.

Then some of the questions were so obscure as to not be what I would call 'Trivia'

The History questions are based on old musicals, that is where the history comes in.

There is also an American bias if sport or TV or politics is a topic.

Then I realised that the questions are on a loop, that they get repeated over time.......or so it seems, maybe I'm wrong.

So I have called it a day.

4. Snowfire + 5 pts 6 126 474

5. jonesjones + 4 pts 6 127 473

This is a prime example of how ludicrous the awarding of points is. Me and jj get both get 6 out of 10 answers correct. I am faster by a single second and am awarded a full point more. Its not rare either and its just plain daft

That's a boundary effect. It would be less significant if scores were to a decimal place (4.6 or 4.7, for example) or two (4.64 or 4.65) but that would still have the effect. I agree that the rounding to whole number scores with a very few players makes the boundary jump notable but if we were playing with, say, 50 players a day, the numbers would blend far more than with just 5. You could have been hundreds of seconds apart and still had the same scores, you only perceive an unfairness because the difference is just one second.

I have seen this in its extreme forms, scores of 10, 10, 9, 9 and 2 would give the two 9s and the 2 the same score. If this was the first day of the competition then it could well re-order the ranking so that the person with the 2 correct is third.

Over the month, however, it does tend to equal itself out. I've tried running it from the score (which I see as an objective measure of how well you've done) rather than the points awarded and not seen any differences in the top of the leaderboard.

As Grantland Rice so memorably expressed the idea,Keep coming back, and though the world may romp across your spine,

Let every game's end find you still upon the battling line;

For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name,

He writes—not that you won or lost—but how you played the Game.

One login on that trivia site can only play in one tournament. If you have two browsers you could use each for a different login, that's what I've done when confronted with the problem, but the issue is certainly a drawback.

I've played in two before now, no problem as long as you log out of one before logging into the other.

It's wonderful to see a few more players on the list - come one come all, the more players the better the game.
