My niece has been anorexic for about 5 years now. She was hospitalized AGAIN this week end and the doc told my brother she is going to die sooner than later. I did some internet research and found a link between anorexia and serotonin levels in the brain. These studies also said that the tryptophan from food drives the serotonin levels in the brain sky high. This causes a lot of anxiety in the person so they stop eating to lower their anxiety. Anyone out there know anything about this? BTW - my brother and I have a cousin who has recovered from anorexia so the genetic link may be true in our family as well. Any input or suggested links would be appreciated.

wish i could be more help, will deff be following this link closely as my friend is also anorexic, agree that it is linked to depression/mental illness

BC - the links I found have some evidence that it many more closely linked to the brain disfunction and the tryptophan in food drives this disfunction upward. Somehow anorexics learn they feel better when they do not eat - it actually makes them feel better by driving down their anxiety and depression. Good luck to your friend - this is a very difficult problem to overcome and it can kill so fast.

Wow, I don't really know anything about anorexia, except that it's self-starvation. I know that someone has to sit with her for every meal, to make sure that she's eating. Karen Carpenter, from The Carpenters musical group, died from anorexia. Maybe, there's a foundation or an organization that is in her name that can help you. I'll pray for your niece. I know how scary it is to have to watch a loved one hurt themselves like that. Stay strong for her sake!

Anorexia is basically about control.

Can I ask is she seeing a pyscologist or anything?

Yes and she lies to everyone. When she is caught in a lie she switches doctors - the LA area is HUGE.

What about looking for clinical trials that might pertain to anorexia, anxiety or depression? The hospital she's at might know more about those kinds of programs.
