Best Bass. Who cares, (if your a bass player then sorry, but still, who cares? Oh! alright then, the house bass player for Motown, whatshisname)

Best Singer. Roy O, (just his vocal talent now).

Best Band. Beatles.

Best solo. Dylan or Neil Young or Bowie (can't decide, but I'm going to see dylan nxt week!).

Best Album. Dark Side of the Moon or Revolver (again can't decide).

Best Live. U2

Best Songwriter. Lennon&McCartney

Best Music Film. The Last Waltz.

Most rocking band. Led Zepp.

Best Song Ever. "A day in the Life"

Best Female. Kate Bush.

Best Alternative. The Smiths and the Pixies (honours even).

Favorite Moment During a Gig. Watching McCartney in Dublin throw "the" hofner bass to a roadie for the laugh and hearing the crowd gasp in horror in the belief he wouldn't catch it. Though the "Floyd" proving they are still untouchable gods at "Live 8" was pretty good as well.

Worst Live Act. The Cranberries, they are an unbeliveably bad live act compared to their recording success.

Worst thing about rock. These types of lists.

I disagree. Rock is very much a spectator sport for us who can only dream of playing like David Gilmour. Nothing wrong in being a bit anal now and again, its cleansing. Certainly no worse than talking about the weather


I guess I look at it like a musician, though I do add a not hugely sucessful one, though I have had my moments here in Ireland. Well of course it is a spectator sport in effect because people are so passionate about it, whether they play or not, actually probably more so when they are not musicians, but ultimately its meaningless. Actually I saw the Floyd boys last night in channel 4 and as a personal though unpublicised tribute I spent most of today working out "Breathe" and "The Great Gig in the Sky" (not very easy vocal to copy!) on my Telecaster. As Bothwell would say: "I have done my duty, and I thank god for it!"

BTW, I hope that you havn't had any more quantum mechanical problems with that doppleganger Arnold from the collapsed alternate universe have you? I hope not, but if you do I am contactable at the clinic at all times.

P.S. Van Halen are not that great, too flashy, too many notes in the guitar solos, your much better off with Gilmour, he is a class act.

I couldn't write a list. My favourites change from day to day. But I remember that their was a superb bass player who could actually play riffs on bass. Damn if I can remember his name. It's on the tip of my tongue. Must go and bang my head against a wall. (Goddammed memory always let's me down when I need it.)

Rock is full of superb musicians both known and unknown. "Top" lists are meaningless to me.

Of all of them, Dave Gilmour was in his element on Live8. Thought he played exceptionally well. It was good to see the concert goers grooving to the music (like lots of little furry animals with picts, hehe).

Side note, Trivia bit.....Dark Side Of the Moon the album was on the top 100 charts for 10 years yep one song or the other but he hung in there for 10 years now that speaks volumes. No wonder those guys never regrouped and came back for the next generations, they did it right the first time.

Pink Floyd originally started out as a jazz band. They spent about ten years or so on the underground scene before emerging with Dark Side of the Moon.

Its always a pleasure when a masterpiece is recognized by the general public, i think the reason that it recieved mixed reviews was that it was at least 15 years (if not more) ahead of its time, it is a remarkable achievement.

Yes, yes, but in reality good drummers who can actually play properly, own a drum kit, and have their own car are a very rare commodity. Bass players are a dime a dozen, though good ones are much less common. This is of course also true for Guitar players (even more so) but I am biased, so thats that. Though I did play bass in previous lives and it was fun to do, so its not all bad.

I think he was having a bad time when I saw him. He couldn't play at all. So many bum notes it was terrible.

I agree, I saw a busker on the streets in barcalona and he was fantastic. My other half was spellbound.

I will say in my defence that I did say thay the best bass player in my opinion was the house player from Motown, so I was fairly much in agreement with you, though I got her sex wrong as I'd forgotten who she actually was (the problem with being a session musician I guess), but anyway that was my point about these lists as they only really reflect who's currently most popular, not who is technically the best, and anyway thats kind of a subjective thing isn't it. There are so many aoustanding performers, muscians, singers, producers, arrangers, writes in all musical fields that its impossible to really be definitive on any of this. Anayway, let the debate continue.
