Im with ya man. People suck and I dont want anything to do with them. My wife and I are very anti-social. However when ya gotta go ya gotta go and more times than not you end up being glad you did. Theres bound to be at least one cool person there. Park the car a few doors down in case you have to go listen to the news or something.

Yes, you need some pointers on how to have a social conversation. Don't talk with your mouth full to start off with...................and follow Nomad's advice!

Oh Far, dear, dear Far... quit it already!! You sound like my DH, uncomfortable in a crowd of more than 2 people! He couldn't
understand it last summer when the neighbors left us a flyer
inviting us to their pool party... and we'd never met them! I went
and had a great time, even got to hold a 7 foot boa constrictor.
I wish there was another term for not drinking rather than "sober"
it sounds like you aren't any fun and that's just not so. I've gone
to parties where I didn't drink 'cause I'd given blood that day and
had all kinds of fun. Parties are to meet people. (I'd skip the
peppers, though!!;) )
You don't have anything in common? Never know until you try and
if all else fails... "How 'bout those Bears?"
:D

Talk to them about your new business. Referrals, right. Threaten them if they don't.

Have one of the kids call you on the cell with a plea to come home right away.. Unless of course they are going with you....

The cell phone thing works well, I have used it several times... :sneaky:
Hell far do like I do find a chair and stay in it... Let them come to you if they wish to talk... Any good college games on tonight..!!
I have to do the dinner party thing more than I like to... actually I hate it but I have it down 1.5 to 2 hours and I'm out of there..:driving:

Simple solution. When at a loss for words, think "What would Peg say". Then you say the opposite.

Far Rider wrote: I have nothing in common with the guy whos house we are going to. NOT A THING! and I will go spend the next four hours wondering what the heck to talk about.
I might yak up a storm here, but I don't talk much in public gatherings.
Perhaps your ability to be a good listener is what gets you all the invites. The talkers need people to vocalize to, not another person who will compete with them for the floor.
Perhaps if you would go and filibuster the evening away, you might find people shying away from you................. This could be a win-win situation, if you can come up with the gab.
Lots of luck!

OR...... Do talk with your mouth full and spray everyone in sight! :wah:
Make it an ewwwwwwwwwwwwww moment....
then drone on, in a monotone, about painting your fence and how long the paint took to dry. You will NEVER get invited back again!!!
But then...neither will your wife either!! Ooops!

Far Rider, starting a conversation with people is easy. Talk about anything. Ask an open-ended question -- like "Don't you really like the color blue?" Point to a picture on the wall and start talking. Talk about the drive to the house. Talk about the house. Talk about your jobs. Talk about a nice sweater or outfit one of your hosts has on. Talk about the dinner. Conversation is easy. Pick something from the surroundings and start talking -- wa-lah.
I read this conversation starting tidbit in a book on social anxiety (Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxiety, I believe). It's on the internet by Jonathan Berent. It works like a charm. I would highly recommend it.
Don't feel awkward, just start talking. Good luck and have fun!
