I'm very sad to hear that football legend George Best passed away this afternoon,

sadly, even after having a liver transplant he did'nt have the strength to give up the booze.

What a footballer though eh?

Superb.

He certainly was supreme amongst the footballers of his era...I admired him a lot and I hope that he wiil be remembered for his 'skills' rather than his 'ills'. He must have been very troubled to have wasted the last 30 years of his life.

Just a snippet about George Nomad.....

"Best played 37 times for Northern Ireland, who were never able to qualify for the World Cup during his international career which spanned 13 years from 1964 to 1977.

"Despite the lack of international success, he was the first footballer to attract a worldwide following because of his good looks, his mercurial talent and the fact he played for a glamorous Manchester United team that was an integral part of the Swinging Sixties.

Regarded by many as the greatest player to come from the British Isles, he was a member of Manchester United's European Cup winning team in 1968, the year he was named European Footballer of the Year."

I know it wont be a popular answer to this but l feel sorry for the family of the person who donated the liver...

It could have gone to someone who would have respected the sacrafice and chance of life it held....

This man was lucky, he had money and fame and was given so many chances to get dry and move on....... If it were not George Best would people have a different view towards the waste of life... I think they might..

But in saying that l hope he can rest in peace now and maybe allow the rest of his family a breather, must have been hard always waiting for the phone to go with another problem...

Thats a fair statement. He had a responsibility and he failed.

I am so sad that Besty is gone, he was regarded (by Pele himself) as the greatest football player of all time. People in America wouldn't really know about this, but he is truly a legend all over the world. He was a decent man, who had too much young too young and wasn't really able to deal with the adoration of the millions who loved him, he was a northener, but he was Irish, and all Irish people who love the game will be sad today, truly a legend has gone. They are playing "The Long and Winding Road" in tribute to him on the radio here, and people are ringing the radio station in tears, its funny how sport can affect people so much there but there you go. All the best, Besty, you will always be a legend.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends who must feel awful at a time like this. You will be missed Besty, a real legend of the game!!

I'm not jealous of many people but by god do I wish I could play like that man could, well, its all over now, and hopefully they won't dissect his life and will let the football speak for itself. I'm a self-confessed football nut, so I would have loved him anyway, but its amazing how much of an impact he seems to have made even to people who aren't that interested in soccer. Suppose he was just one of those special people.

There was a very good TV programme on at 7pm for and hour about George. It was very interesting and focussed more on his talent than his other 'life' but of course it was mentioned. I think we all have to remember that George was actually a shy person and was the first footballer/sportsman to be dragged into the commercial side of life with sponsorships, modeling offers and the such because of his good looks. He was looked on as an idol akin to the Beatles in this era.

I'm sure that subsequent 'stars' have learnt from his experiences and with all the support that clubs have available nowadays, had he been born in another era things may have turned out differently.

I had forgotten that he played in America for a while where he lived with Angie, his first wife and his son Callum.

"George Best graced the North American Soccer League, playing for the LA Aztecs (below), Fort Lauderdale and San Jose"

Sorry nomad, but soccer is what people who don't know what real football is call it. What you would call football I would call, running around trying to catch a funny ball, falling over, having a break, getting up, shouting something, running around again, falling over again, having another break, going for a chat with your coach, going back out on the field again, running around, adjusting your helmet, catching the ball again, falling over, getting up etc etc etc for 4 hours. Tried to watch it a few times, inevitably found something more interesting on (like an antiques show, or the weather report). Still I'm sure you love it and thats nice.

and what a charming man, very gentle, he really knew how to party.
