Ok for some of you-this may not seem like a big deal.and it may even seem down right terrible but since I am from IOWA and all.........

My daughter went deer hunting for the 1st time today..she had to pass the hunters safety thing and all that- so this was it..we tried to tell her many people go out and don't come home with their tag filled so DON'T be upset if u don't get one.....Oh hell!!!!!!:wah: She filled her tag and shot her first deer by 9 AM......I started to cry when they told me.. I was soo very proud of her..She shot a button buck - and then this afternoon a 10 point jumped up -she took the shot because her dad and uncle had not filled their tags yet--and she grazed his butt -she shot again and missed but her uncle got it...She said-- "MOM that 10 point should have been MINE" LOL I am very proud..I didn't post this to offend anyone...but we are hunters and I am proud!:-6

I knew some body would do that LOL - Oh well to each his own...I am proud! LOL :wah: --

Just an example....we have to have sharp shooter come into Iowa City and surrounding areas to kill them off...they are taking over many many areas...causing a lot of damage and they can kill or mame too..sounds strange but a teacher friend of mine hit one...it flipped up and went feet first into her car..wasn't dead and kicked her till she broke every bone in her face....she was a drop dead gougeous girl and ended up being very scarred up---very sad...So BAMBI or not- they need to have the season here...:-6

Congrats to your daughter!

Twenty years ago I would have been upset by the whole hunting thing but having spent a winter in the Rocky Mountains and watched whole herds of deer starve to death, I have come to believe that hunting to fill your freezer is much more humane.

If you have an extra roast that just won't fit in the freezer, pm me for my address. :D

how old is your daughter? It's illegal to hunt deer in the u.k. don't know if they're counted as endangered or something. I think it's legal in Scotland at certain times of the year.

Congrats on your daughter filling her tag, mom! Did she dress it out herself? That's an eerie feeling the first time. It's deer season here too. My son and grandson filled their tags the first day and I filled mine towards the end of the week. We have an antler restriction here. Must be a 4 point or larger to harvest a buck. Button bucks would have to be harvested under a doe tag.

I believe that is true here to ..It will be filled as a doe tag...We need a year round season here in Iowa..It is becoming so dangerous to drive anywhere anymore..:( But the fear of opening the season is to many "game" hunters leaving them in the fields etc. after killing them... In Iowa the first season is Bow--then 2 seasons of rifle follow.. This was opening first season for rifle...I am waiting to see pics today when she gets backs! I know that this is weird to some people...but if we did not eliminate the population--corn prices-bean prices EVERYTHING we grow here would be destroyed....It is just the "CIRCLE OF LIFE"

Mom, I know that you know what you mean, and I know what you mean, but I really have to clarify one thing you said here, before all the "bleeding hearts" jump all over it: We don't eliminate the population, we control it by hunting. I know, I know, semantics; but you'd be amazed how many arguments are built around it.

Know what ya mean about controlling the population. We are overrun with black bear. Had a 3 day hunt here, before Thanksgiving. Just in my county alone, 170 bears were harvested. State total was 3,331! Bear population has really grown. Do you have bear hunting in Iowa?

That is so very COOL!!!! When is the venison party - do you soak the meat in milk before cooking? I just love it that you encouraged your daughter to hunt. I was taught when I was young and I know it made me a stronger person. When a person hunts for food it gives them an entirely new respect for nature.

HA HA - Thanks BR..I did get a little slack for that through a PM....I just laughed...BUT thanks for clarifying that..They are beautiful creatures but can cause so much distruction...they are known for sets of multiple twins and they are good a reproducing FAST!! So -it is important to CONTROL them....:D

Mom, thanks for sharing the pictures!! That's a great looking rack and your daughter looks darn proud, (if a little cold!)

You say you got some slack through a PM about something? What was that, if I may ask? The actual hunting??? I hope you weren't offended by my clarifying the "control" vs. "eliminate" thing. That wasn't it, was it?? I don't mean to nit-pick, but I have seen some arguments about hunting built on just such technicalities, pathetic as that is....:-5

Anyhoo....thanks again for the pics. I hope to be posting one of my kill yet this year, if I find the time. Now that I can afford to go, I don't have the time! Figures, huh?

Ohh no way BR.. not u!! LOL Just a concerned citizen about teaching such a young child to hurt animals and touch guns...exact words were "PLAY WITH GUNS" but anyway--- my kids don't PLAY with guns and as far as I see it--if they do not have something constructive to do - then a child becomes DESTRUCTIVE...I have no plans for my kids to know any other life style.. Their father and I are divorced and they enjoy this time with their dad as much as I did when we were married..my kids -even my 6 year old can skin a coon in 5 minutes flat...and this mom is proud that they know what a shot gun, rifle, knife etc are suppose to be used for...educate them..they know whats right and wrong..hiding it doesn't fix it...My dad kept all his guns behind his bedroom door..Not locked up-- you knew NOT to touch them..ever unless u were told too--- Ours are locked up as well as their dads..I don't see a problem with how I am raising my daughter...and if a self righteous idiot can judge me for that- when they can't say it publicly then they can Pi** off.....LMAO - sorry to be soo nasty....but really BR - I do appreciate your correction and you were right on about that...Love ya girly!! Love to see your pics when u get the time......

Hey Mom, take no notice of the one telling you how to raise your kids. How incredibly presumptuous, rude and ignorant!!

I'm glad this thread didn't turn into a hunting debate. I'm not going to turn it into one now, either. But if the person who had the balls to question how you are raising your children cares to PM me, I will gladly engage in a debate about hunting. AFTER I explain to that person how much of an ass I think they are for trying to tell you how to parent. Keep up the good work Mom!! :-4

MomInIowa:

My family go target shooting any time we can. I agree with you about giving the kids something constructive to do. My boys, who are 10 and 8, are becoming quite the marksman, especially the 10 year old. He can tell you what gun and caliber which gun is most of the time, he's better than me....lol. The kids are yours, no one has the right to tell you how to raise them. Keep up the great job mom!
