This weekend I offered my help to clean up and prep a duplex (the beau bought it as a rental property) so it can be rented Jan 1 sooooooo here is what the adventure entailed.....

The walls in an attempt to somewhat improve the resale were all patched up, I don't mean one here and there I mean there was not an area 1 foot by one foot anywhere that was un patched. Even the wood door frames, and doors had patch on them. The kitchen floor had a huge hunk of the linoleum ripped up and it was all blackened beneath it. The flooring under the fridge was for lack of a better word, gunky. Along the counter edges up on the back splash part had been pulled away and covered with just a crappy tack job slap on piece of moulding, once removed there was fussy growth beneath. The house smelled of dampness and mold, and the carpet was so disgusting and filthy I told the beau I would not help unless we had good quality gloves and respiratory masks. So we spent 4 hours ripping up carpet and underlay from both levels and OMG that woman who lived there was a disgusting pig. Ohhh the subfloor was stained too, as bad as the carpet, like the patched walls there was not a 1 x 1 foot square area untouched anywhere by stain, some of the stains were festering. They bubbled up the sub floor. And the dust we created I am sure was toxic. She had mentioned there had been a leak, interestingly, the entire bathroom upstairs had been redone, and was the best part of the house. By looking at the flooring in the hall outside the bathroom it looked like a good leak. The basement is dank and dark, and the ceiling tiles are water damaged as well. The carpets had areas where there were disgustingly grossly stained. And apparently this woman and her 2 daughters lived here like slobs for 20 years. I wonder if the doors that were all replaced were so badly bashed this woman was embarassed to leave them behind. I wonder if the fridge was removed because it was an oozing mess that she was embarassed to leave behind...OMG I can't believe people live like that. I am not purist myself but....

Anyone else ever get into this kind of situation. Thank god this is going as a rental after all is said and done.

We took Jr Minks over last nite, and she was horrified yet curious. She could not fathom how folks could let the place become such a filthy pig pen. She said "if what they have left behind is this bad, imagine how bad the things they removed or rebuilt were" ie: interior doors?? The refrigerator?? The front entry original flooring? The main bathroom?

She was also curious as to why there were grubby hand prints all over the door to the attic. Kinda creepy stuff.
