HI guys

I need some help or advice or both :-)

I'm trying to get a place in UCC in September. That's our University here in Cork. I haven't done a degree here in Ireland before and I'm over 23 so I will be applying as a mature student. I always wanted to study Biology or Science and I would love to do a degree in Bio Medicine.

Now on the application form you have to give reasons why. Anybody got any ideas? It's something I can't explain really

Tell them why you want that degree: do you want to help people when you finish? Do you want to use it for research? Do you want it so you continue along the educational route to be a doctor or put this degree to use?

Give them a reason why you want to do it, and tell them you have always been interested in this field.

I would like to work in a lab and find out what causes certain illnesses. I just don't know how to say it so that I can impress them enough to take me

Arnold's advice is good, if that is Galbally's field he would know what to say.

How long must your entry be? How many words?

It can be as long as I like but I don't want to rant.

I'm kind of too shy to PM Galbally. I don't know if he would mind :o

Galbally would not mind, and LC's advice to write it straight from your heart is true. Just tell them how you feel about that field, and why you want to study it, and why you want to study it at their institution. That will impress them enough to want you very much.

Thanks Chonsi, I really hope so. I will have to buff up on my apptitude tests etc as well. I like doing those however so that's OK. :D

Never be devastated, and put applications out to at least 3 institutions. Then your base is covered to study in your selected field, and you might get better offers or scholarships from other institutions.

Hey Jenny, l know what you are going through...:-3

I applied last year to go to Uni and lm also a mature student, (31)

I was so nervous l was scared silly everytime the post came, and filling out the application was a nightmare, as were the interviews.

I was so certain (being an occasional pessimist) that they would never accept me.

Well all the University's l applied to did answer and shock gasp horror, all offered me a place, including my dream Uni that l had been warned 'don't hold your breath' by many due to the many applications they recieve...

Here l am now having finished my first term and loving it..

The thing to do is as many have said, get info, they like that.

Be sure they are where you want to go and why you want to go there..

And finally, believe in yourself, because if you dont who else will??

My final word is go for it , if it is your dream, trust me there is nothing more satisfying xx:D

It must all be applied for through the CAO here in Ireland which is Central Applications Office. It is a form that you fill out and put in your choices no matter which University or technical college. It seems like a bit of a mountain when you don't understand the whole procedure but I've got my hiking boots on :)

Ah, it sounds more sensible there. We have to apply to multiple ones, at a cost for each application.

A female in research? Oh, how my heart flutters! That is just terrific! I have always said we need more women in research. I think we need more women because there has just got to be a better way to do some of those female exams. Look what we have to do as opposed to the men.

C'mon girl, give it all you got and I have my fingers crossed for you. You'll do splendedly!
