Well, sort of!



I got a call Friday to come in and donate... the lady said they had NO

units of O-Positive on the shelf (my type) and were in desperate need,

due to the holidays and flooding, etc. they weren't able to get their

mobile units out to donors and that is 75% of their "business". She also

told me about this wonderful "donor promotion" this weekend... depending

on the time of day you came in, you got served breakfast or lunch!

I'm THERE!! (I just LOVE breakfast!) So instead of waiting for the mobile

unit to hit my town, I drive up the freeway to the blood bank and when

I go in... guess what they're serving for "breakfast"? Little cinnamon rolls

cut in pieces... packaged grocery store stuff. And a piece of fruit to go

with it!



Oh well. At least they took me ahead of about 6 other people, I think

because of my donor "status" (I'm coming up on 5 gallons with them)

and I got a free calendar.



Wonder if the lunchtime donors got half a bologna sandwich on white

bread?

My A+ blood is not rare but I have given blood many times. In the military I gave to get a day off. In college, I gave because I needed the $25. In later life I just donated for the glass of orange juice and roll.

You are toooo funny - bologna sammies. I used to donate because I have "B". T-Girl has "AB" (proof positive her Dad is her bio Dad - LOL) Anyway - she donates because she saw me do it and her type is fairly rare. They won't let me donate anymore because I had cancer. I hope you inspire others to give. :-4

Are you sure you don't have low blood pressure? I did the Iron thing for years and it wasn't right.

They set up the blood mobile here at the Vets Club.

All kinds of homemade foods to eat afterwards...juice, finger sandwiches, cookies, etc. I have A- blood.

Well....in my neck of the woods finger sandwiches are just lovely, made by the little old ladies that help out at the blood bank. :p

If rare, they want your blood as often as you will give it.

I'm A - also. The last time I went to give blood, my iron level was to low so I was refused. But I still got a beautiful Christmas ornament for trying.

I heard that I couldn't give blood because I had Hep A years ago and also lived over seas for a long time, but today I called the blood bank to verify what I had heard and It seems that I will be able to give blood, so I am going tomorrow.



We don't get payed for it and we don't get breakfast or lunch either. :-1

You need to really ask the blood bank about that......any Hepatitis makes you a NO for blood donation.

Hepatitis A makes you a permanent deferral at my blood bank.

i'm O-negative....universal donor but can only receive O-neg. i was always donating because it was so needed. when i had my knee blown out/shot i donated for myself in advance of reconstructive surgery.

I did ask NV they said they do extra screening, I was 12 when I had it, I'm going tomorrow so I'll let ya know how I go. I can't even remember what type I am. I have always wanted to donate and your post made me call and ask about my Hep A.



Also they won't take my blood if I have been in England for more than 6 months. due to mad cow, has anyone ever got it though

That was a good way to do it. I have no idea what I am.

Here's the breakdown on frequency of blood types:



AB Negative: .06%

B Neg: 1.5%

AB Positive: 3.4%

A Negative: 6.3%

O Negative: 6.6%

B Positive: 8.5%

A Positive: 35%

O Positive: 37%



Persons with type "O" blood are Universal Donors, that type can

go to any of the others.



But the blood the bank needs the most is YOURS!

Interesting! Prompted me to look up my type on my blood donor card.

I'm A- too.

I remember the first time I gave. It was at work. Thereafter they posted all of our blood types on the bulletin board -- this was before the privacy act came in. I got a terrible razzing from everyone. They wanted to know why I was so different......

Everyone else had a simple letter. Mine took 2 lines! They listed all the subgroups!:mad:

The prats won't take my O neg because I was in the UK during the mad cow scare. Hell, I didn't make them mad!

A friend of a friend who was only 42 died of it before christmas...I think it's fairly rare though

Wow, Thats the only person I'v heard of that had it. I was living over seas in the 90's and worried a biy about what I was eating. The rumour was that the Europeans had sold all their infected cattle to the Russians cheap and we were eating it. I never belived it, but you never know the truth either.

Well they took my blood, but before they release it they will test it for Hep A,



I got a sticker and a bandage on my arm, so that made me feel special. I also got drinks and snacks.

WAY TO GO O-SOX!!!
