May I talk about a building first?

All through Nepal and India, I secretly wondered if the Taj Mahal could possibly compare to the splendid temples and forts of the Moguls, etc. The itnerary put Agra close to the end of the trip, and we arrived, dazzled by so many sights, we were suffering from "sensory overload."

Finally, we entered at dawn and silently went through the gate....it's planned so that you see a series of openings in darkness, with the Taj Mahal perfectly framed at the end.

It was so beautiful and so perfect that I wept!

The air in Agra is smoky (that's politely put) and the sunrise turned everything a lavender/rose. The perfect proportions of the building and the pools leading to it inspire a sense of awe and serenity. I was mindful of how many millions of people had stood where I stood and felt the emotions I felt.

The most beautiful place I've seen is Torres del Paine, in Patagonia. I can't post a direct link, but if you google it, you'll see stunning images. It's one of those places that are impossible to forget and it's also impossible to stop photographing the changing light.

I have to agree with you about the Taj.

Despite having my expectations dulled by seeing pictures of it so many times and all the tourist hype, it was truly one of the most exquisite things I have ever seen in my life. In the very truest sense of the word, it was breathtaking.

I'm glad you understood what I was trying to say. I hadn't considered that we've all seen the Taj, all our lives.

You know...it's like the Mona Lisa! I never really "got" it until I stood, awestruck, tears in my eyes and felt the genius and power of it.

(Life's hard on the plains of Mongolia. And it takes a yurt-full of people to raise a child.)
